Architecture Wednesday: Storybook Home

Straddling the border between the Hudson Valley and the Berkshires, this not-so-tiny house comes with all the hallmarks of a fairytale summer property.

Built in 1875, it has the wood-sided gables and deep verandah of a period home, with established gardens that burst forth from the half-acre property, visited by birds and butterflies. And yet its 1,200 square feet easily make space for two bedrooms, two bathrooms, an office and eat-in kitchen. The living space has super-high ceilings and a gas fireplace, leading out to a sunroom converted from the old porch. Clever nooks hide a laundry room, pantry and energy-efficient upgrades like a full-house generator and air conditioning,

Outside are wildflower gardens, vegetable planters and an outdoor living area with a kitchen with outbuildings that include a chicken coop and it can be yours for just $480,000.

  1. Take it down! SOLD!!!!!!!!! You had me with the first picture! Quiet, very secluded, and almost overtaken by greenery. LOVE the color of the house, and near perfect style, layout and appointments for me personally. The kitchen is glorious that tilework is beautiful. Of all things too I like is the little cubbies under the stairs...great use of space. I could live there full time!!!!!! Chic, yet relaxed and comfy feeling. A dream home for me really.

And I have friends at the Woods who have a whole complete outdoor kitchen on their site...it is very fun.

    1. I like this one, too. I always love a black house, a farmhouse, and some great indoor outdoor spaces.

  4. That's what I would call New England Cozy. The tile backsplash is too busy for my taste, but there's not too much of it. Love the outdoor space! Give me a lifetime supply of skeeter repellent and I could live there.

  5. I'll take it!! The Hudson Valley is nice. Noel Casler-Diaper Don's arch enemy, lives in the valley, and he shows pictures of his property. I love everything about the home. Inside and out. Far enough away from the hustle of city life but close enough to pop in for coffee and provisions. I would do a little landscaping, but nothing too severe. Love the rooms and the light. What a great place to watch the snow fall during the winter months. Down the line, I may want to change the exterior color to something cheerful and uplifting. Something appropriate to the period of the house. Is the black trend over?

  10. The price seems incredibly cheap for what looks like a nice home to live. The outlook is so pleasant too.

  11. I'm so impressed with this property! I wouldn't want to be responsible for the gardens but would be thrilled to spend my time sitting outdoors and enjoying them. House, what house?
