Architecture Wednesday: Justicia Penthouse

I just adore a penthouse view, and this sprawling rooftop abode overlooks the central barrio of Justicia, in Madrid. The apartment sits atop an historic building but recently underwent a thorough renovation creating a home that is both old and new.

In a little more than 2,000 square feet, the home presents a strikingly open layout—living, dining and kitchen—complete with vaulted ceilings, exposed beams, painted brick walls, and white floorboards.

The bright living room is anchored by a large fireplace and sits opposite of the dining area and kitchen. Steps away, expansive steel-framed glass doors open to a large private terrace—an idyllic setting for entertaining and mesmerizing views of the historic center of Justicia.

Back inside, the long kitchen counter runs the length of a textured brick wall, leaving plenty of floor space for a large dining table.

On the opposite side of the foyer, a custom shelving unit spans the hallway leading to the private wing. There are two bedrooms and two baths on this side of the home, with the primary bedroom featuring a custom mural and wardrobe.

Historic and modern, a penthouse with a view and it can be your for just $2,727,961 USD.

  1. Very cool location and I like the glass wall onto the terrace. But those rooms look small, given they’re wide angle shots. And someone could have done a better job staging. (You can tell what kind of mood I’M in. Do you need help with your snark this week?)

    1. That one bedroom does seem real narrow, but that means guests won't stay forever!! And of course I'd refurnish!

    1. Art is so subjective, and sometimes awful.

  3. As library buildings go? This is a nice one. I like that they provide a shower for the homeless. I do feel bad for their janitorial staff, though. All that white... tsk, tsk.

    1. Yeah, I could live in that city, and that terrace and that great room, but the rest seems off-putting a little bit.

  6. Something about this one is throwing me off. My whole self is thrown off by this. Seems too fussy and awkward of a layout or something. And I love textures...but there is alot going on with the walls, floors, ceilings....Ill pass on this one.

    1. I'm loving the great room and the terrace, but the bedrooms and baths don't seem to line up for me. I could live on that terrace.

  7. Not wild about the drapes being used as walls and what looks to be sliding doors.

    1. That's just used to let light into the hallway when the drapes are open.

  8. I have mixed feelings about this. Love the light. Now all the crap in the bathroom tells me we have storage issues or it's just I don't care. Is that cheap plywood? I need to see it in person.

  9. I love the idea of a penthouse, of course, and I love the terrace. Can you imagine late summer nights there with sangría y tapas?? I'd die.
I love some things about it (airy, open) and I love the artwork they have (the giant photo!!) but I'm with Maddie in that it throws me off a little. Still, if I had the three mil, I'd hit it.

    XOXO

  10. I like the first four pictures directly under your text, but that long narrow hallway needs to be wider. Just one extra foot in width would be enough. I would love to sit out on that terrace and watch a sunset or sunrise.

    1. I'm gonna go mathematician on your ass ... it looks to me like there are wood floors in the hall, wide-plank wood floors. Even if each plank is six-inches wide that makes the hallway about 40-48 inches wide. I think the picture is deceptive.
      But, yes, that terrace ...

  11. I didn't see it listed when I was making plans for December, oh well, we will be nearby for a few days. The space is better than the decorating. I agree with the lack of storage issue, in the baths and kitchens, it appears to me that it is lived in and was not professionally staged for the photos, at that price point a housekeeper and designed for the photos would be wise.

    1. I would completely redo the decorating, but love the space.

  12. Not much I like about this one. It's all about the kitchen for me and this one is a big no. I like the shower in the last picture, and the terrace. That's about it.
