Architecture Wednesday: Chislehurst Place

A 1929 Spanish masterpiece, this meticulously preserved residence enchants with sweeping landmark views and timeless craftsmanship.

You enter through a courtyard that features an outdoor kitchen and dining area, arriving inside under a majestic rotunda graced by hand-painted Malibu tiles and intricate wrought iron staircases. Multiple archways, soaring vaulted ceilings, exposed wooden beams, grand fireplaces, and wrought iron balconies evoke an era of refined grace, while stained and leaded glass windows bathe the home in radiant light.

Gather with friends in the sunlit kitchen designed for culinary artistry and open to the front courtyard or relax and read a book by the office fireplace. A dramatic entertaining living room comes complete with a Juliet balcony; downstairs is a home theater, a cozy bar in the family room for your favorite cocktails and then unwind by the cascading saltwater spa before heading off to one of the three en suite bedrooms.

Nestled within the coveted hills of Los Feliz, this estate, formerly owned by actress Olivia Wilde, features four bedrooms, three-and-one-half baths in just under 3300 square feet and recently sold for $5M.

Missed it by that much!

  1. You had me at 1929 Spanish masterpiece! A house with some personality!!!! LOVE THIS! I always love the mix of textures and architectural elements with Spanish design. I love the mix of white, tiles, and woods. And the kitchen is insanely gorgeous, yet simple and easy of access.

And yes...I even loved the monkey wallpaper!!!! Every home needs a touch of whimsical wallpaper somewhere. And with all the other textures in the bathroom, it works.

  2. Very nice, though I'd probably paint those walls a pale mocha.

    1. Oh no, not pale mocha AKA greige beige.

  3. I just can not close my eyes to the fact that you have an absolute dream home. The mix of Spanish elegance with Malibu tile, wrought iron, and soaring ceilings must make every room feel like a piece of art.

I tell you once again. You have so wonderful home I always dreaming of

    1. Not my home ... unless I win the lottery.

  4. It's a lovely home, though I'm a bigger fan of the outdoors than inside. While the beams are incredible, I always feel like the dark ceiling makes the rooms look short. Not an issue for me at 5'1", so I don't know why it bothers me so much. :)

    1. I will say we have several dark rooms in our house and the idea that dark colors make the room feel smaller is not necessarily true. Dark colors actually make the corners recede and the rooms feel a bit more spacious.
We have a deep dark midnight blue foyer and a black powder room at Casa Bob y Carlos!

    2. I love that wallpaper; it's perfect for a little space and you wouldn't be in there long enough to have it drive you crazy!

😃❤️ You had me at Spanish architecture. You had me at white walls (with a few rooms in muted grays and greens and blues). You had me at lots of beautiful windows/sunlight. You had me at home theater/bar. You had me at Olivia Wilde! You even had me at $5M...seems a bargain! 👏
😢 But, LA? I have a definite bias against the whole area. Beautiful views with extra smog? No thanks. But, that exact house sitting on the low cliffs over the Pacific at Pebble Beach, Monterey, Carmel with every window at the rear of the home open to watch and hear waves crashing...Nirvana! And, when I die, just throw me off the back wall into the Pacific Ocean 'cause that's my plan no matter where I die...just more convenient from my coast home!! 🤣

    1. I think this house is above the smog line, so you'd be looking DOWN into the pollution.
On a beach, though, yes please.

Your own Falcon Lair ! :)
Luv the Spanish style homes and casitas of LA.
Los Feliz, Whitley Heights and Outpost in the Hollywood Hills are loaded with these homes, from bungalows to mansions. I would decorate the house in Spanish, Italian and Moorish style furnishings. The monkey wallpaper is just like the whimsical decor of the bathrooms found in the famed luxury liners of the French Line.

    1. I agree; I would lose some of the furniture and art but the house itself, paint colors and wallpapers, would stay!

  9. How curious that a Spanish-style house in Los Feliz would be called "Chislehurst Place." (It is a great house, though. Very LA.)

  10. Love it. I could live there. The light. The outside space. And just a few miles West we have the Bird Streets. This is where RuPaul used to live. Anything North of Sunset Boulevard would be nice. If I remember correctly, all the necessitates would be close by because driving anywhere in LA is a nightmare. And my favorite bookstore Book Soup is close by.

  11. I like it. They can take the furniture, art, and rugs; not much of interest to me. But I wouldn’t change the monkey wallpaper. Can it be shipped here? Pool, too?

    1. I don't mind a wacky wallpaper in a powder room because you're not really spending a lot of time there. Now, a bedroom or dining wallpapered in monkeys??? Oh hell no!
