Architecture Wednesday: Malibu Midcentury Beach House

Yes, it’s a lot of white but look at the spaces and the views and the property; that’s the magic.

This 1958 midcentury on a cliffside perch situated in the chic Malibu enclave of Big Rock and owned by actress Emma Stone is anything but modern and sterile. There are unobstructed views of the Pacific and Catalina and coastline city lights. And with almost nothing but native plants and the ocean in sight, this three bedroom and two bathroom bluff-side retreat feels like its own private Malibu.

  1. Nice, but way too white, and that gold trim and fixtures in the bathroom? That's tacky.

    1. Gold, or brass is a thing, but it ain't my thing.

  2. Oh yes, when can we come visit? Add a little color, some art. I'd either need to install a lift, or get rid of the bath tub, I'd get rid of it and have a larger shower. 2,000 sq ft, big enough without being too much work.

    1. I did think the tub seemed like a climb! And some great art would be a nice addition too, But the property and the views are everything.

  3. I could work with this. Yes, there is too much white, but that is fixable. I love the views and outdoor spaces. I would tweak the bathrooms. The vessel sink, standalone bathtub, and the blue sink set up in the other bathroom must go. I read once that farmhouse sinks may not be a good option because the water runs down the front and ruins the cabinets underneath. Extra millwork must be applied to alleviate this. Love the floorplan. Now let me call Cher and invite her over for drinks. She can leave the boytoy at home.

🥰🥰 Were there problems in the house? I didn't notice. I immediately dragged my chair out to the lanai and I'll be staring at the ocean until further notice!! 🤩🫠😎

    1. It's a lot of white, but I'd be in the garden looking at the sea so ..... I'm with you!

  6. Wow, that's a nice place! The natural light and the views from all the windows are amazing. I'd never sit on the couch though...it's facing the wrong way. :)

    1. I thought that too about the couch!!! If you have that view you need to see it!

  7. Imagine it without the white paint on the brickwork, exposed beams, and exposed ceiling deck i.e. exposed materials which would be more likely the original design. The interior designers to "updated" (destroyed the original design) needs to be run out of town.

    1. People equate white with beach and that's not entirely true!

  8. I would be thrilled to have a one room 300sq ft beach house on Cape Cod.

  9. Fabulous.
I love white/neutrals in beach houses. And this one is very distinctively beach-y. I agree that the original details were probably fabulous, though...

    1. It could have been nice with some of the original details as long as you have that view and yard

Too much white paint, the beams should have been left in their natural wood tone.
If you ever get a mid century home keep it as original as possible. A relative has one with ventana windows and the original kitchen with 60’s space age built in appliances. :)

    1. I don't mind SOME of the white but wood beams should stay natural.

    1. It's kind of blinding, so you're find me in a chaise lounge sipping a cock-a-tale and enjoying my view while the house is repainted!

  12. There's a lot of white, but that's not too bad. I don't like the the exposed brass or gold coloured plumbing at all. But wow, what a stunning location.

    1. Those gold fixtures are supposed to be the new thing, but they already look old to me.

  13. I'm a little jealous of that "French Farmhouse" kitchen sink and the depth of the bathtub, The place needs more colour in my opinion, but overall not bad. In the first picture, that row of homes on the lower level are just a big wave away from being washed out to sea. Unless there is more land than can be seen from this angle.

    1. That tub seems enormous to me!
I think those homes are safe, except for that climate change stuff.

  14. OK, I DO love it, but yeah too much white.

  15. It's a bit white to my taste but that can soon be sorted. It really is stunning though, isn't it (and I love Emma Stone too)!

    1. Right? A can or two of paint and it's a new house!

  16. I like the house, but my instinct tells me it would have had natural brick and paneling before it was overenthusiastically enwhitened.
