Architecture Wednesday: Barcelona Vibes In Culver City

After last week’s over-the-top listing, I thought we’d continue with the rustic on a much smaller-than-JLo’s-ass scale and about $40M cheaper.

This is a new home in Culver City is an ode to fine craftsmanship and high style, with expertly applied plaster and lime wash, custom millwork cabinetry and ceiling details, unique flooring, all on a small lot, with a pool and a one-bedroom rental unit in back.

In the main house an inviting foyer showcases textures and tones that blend together to create a  serene living area. A front sitting area with bioethanol fireplace opens into a dining room with custom print mural. Through an arched opening the kitchen is set below sky lights with Calacatta marble counters, shiplap backsplash and white oak custom cabinetry, and laundry room.

There are two bedrooms and two bathrooms on this level along with a sunny den with a custom scalloped ceiling and large windows to the European-inspired yard with decadent landscaping, a sunny sitting niche and patio for gathering and lounging by the pool.

The primary suite occupies the entire second level, with fireplace and balcony open to the backyard and pool below; a spacious bathroom offers soaking tub and large marble shower with bench, dual sinks and vanity area, plus walk-in closet with plenty of built-ins.

A newly built guest house in back offers full amenities including kitchen and small private courtyard space, perfect as an office or guest space or rentable ADU.

The 3100 square foot, three bedroom and three bath home is on the market for a mere $2.5 million … nowhere near JLo pricing.

  1. I love this place. A lot of the furnishings will have to go and the landscaping and exteriors just need a bit of finesse, but that’s not a problem. How soon do you think they can get it here? I know the perfect spot.

    1. I agree that some of the furniture is not my taste. If I could find a boat big enough, I'd ship it Priority Mail!

Yah, Marcia LaRue! I'm finally home. I'm moving in and not leaving! Culver City is a part of LA I can learn to love...but that dark bathroom! Is that where the hauntings and supernatural rituals take place?! What is it doing in this otherwise bright and cheery home?! The bathroom with the squiggly tile floor is where I will be! 😁

Marcia, that agreement on the bathroom was me, not anonymous. I got so excited I forgot to be me!! 🙃🤪

    3. I love a dark moody bathroom. I mean, how much actual time do you spend in there??

  5. It looks like a reasonable size and I love the decor. But of course I still couldn't afford it. LOL

  7. LOVE!!!!!! The style, design, and the colors scheme has me written all over it!!!! I love all the white, creme, tan, and camel tones. Nice light and airy. Adore that open wall in the foyer...nice touches like the recessed ceiling in the dinning room....and the bathroom tile work in both baths is gorgeous! Love the beamed ceiling above the one shower too.And nothing to complain about with the outdoor areas either. Hell...Id even buy it furnished!!!!

    2. The kitchen is my favorite spot in the house. I'd need a wee bit more color elsewhere.

  8. Did I miss something. The last Architecture Wednesday was 1/24. Just sayin.

Love the home. The floorplan is accommodating. I am not a fond of light wood. I do love the layout and the guest house in the back were you can stick the mother in law or earn some extra coins for taxes with a renter. That bathroom is dark and I have read bad reviews on those vessel sinks. A few of the spaces/rooms need to breath a little more. They appear to be cramped/claustrophobic I would retool the back yard/pool area to make it more of an outdoor space. Maybe even do away with the pool. The weather is not too brutal that one could enjoy some time outside reading, visiting with friends... LA is hell for traffic BUT the melting pot of people, culture, and food is amazing.

    1. PS-What happened to the window coverings? Maybe for phots they did w/o. But I will need to close things up at night. I am not in my 20's anymore-but still have a decent body-and walking around at night and morning buck naked may scare the neighbors.

    2. I postponed these after losing my Dad, so there was a gap from the last one to this one.

    3. I was referring to your opening sentence of this post "After last week’s over-the-top listing, I thought we’d continue..." My communication was not clear.

  9. Lovely house! Culver City is a great place to live in terms of amenities, but traffic can be really insane during drive times, not to mention freeway congestion! It used to be a sort of backwater place with lots of rentals for students and working people. Those days are rapidly fading. Given how mad the weather out he3re is becoming, having that pool would be a godsent in the summer! xoxo

    1. I imagine there's not a lot of spots for college kids and working folk in LA these days.

  10. How do they keep the water from spraying out of the shower in that squiggly floor bathroom? How does a person fit along the sides of that bed in the guest cottage? The bed looks too big for that room.

    1. I think that shower has a slight slope to the floor so any splashes run to the drain.
And maybe that photo of the bed, which I didn't notice, is kind of an optical illusion???

  11. Whoa
This is a new house? Great detail! I'm loving the distribution and the use of wood and natural materials. That bathroom!!! I love the outdoor spaces, though. I can imagine that pool in a hot day.
Love the den but that bed in the guest bedroom I agree is kinda too large for the space...

    XOXO

  13. Dahlink, No, just No! In my experience Culver City is the Bermuda Triangle of the LA basin. The roads break the grid and whatever falls into Culver City stays there. I'm sure that there are perfectly nice people who live there and raise their families, but one has to get out occasionally.

You get a lot more for your money in Culver city than here in Toronto. I would have to rip out the dark bathroom and put a single bed in the bunk house. Gigi

  15. No thank you, pass. Did you notice that you have to go outside to get into the laundry room? In what 1970's horror film set did they find the black toilet? There are too many design flaws.
