This newly built Dutch barn-style house is set in a rural area in the Somerset countryside, between Glastonbury and Castle Cary. Completed in 2024, the house was been designed with sustainable solutions in mind. High-specification insulation, an air source heat pump and underfloor heating were all added to create a climate-conscious, energy-efficient home with a minimal carbon footprint. The house is approached via a shared private driveway from the main road. The glazed double doors at the front entrance sit in a larch-clad recess, contrasting with the expanse of black powder-coated corrugated steel on the main elevations. The interior extends to just under 2,500 square feet in an upside-down arrangement. You enter into a light-filled double-height entrance hall, where a steel staircase with oak treads rises to the first floor to the open-plan kitchen—with high-quality cabinetry, quartz worktops, integrated Miele appliances and a breakfast bar—with the dining and living spaces extending the full length of the house with arched ceilings exposing the structural steel frame. The outer walls are lined with sliding glass doors offering views to the fields and meadows beyond. On one side of the room is the powder room and a concealed storage area while at the far end, sliding doors open out to a raised terrace with steps leading down to the garden On the ground floor, a central hallway provides access to four generous bedrooms and a separate living room, or snug, all with direct access to the garden via fully glazed double doors. In the far corner, the primary suite has dual windows, a vaulted ceiling and ample wardrobe space. It is also served by a tiled en suite with double basin vanity unit and walk-in shower. The adjacent bedroom also has an en suite shower room, and the remaining bedrooms are served by a bathroom and additional WC on either side of the entrance hall. The house is set within grounds of approximately a third of an acre. To the front, there is an extensive graveled area for parking and space for a double garage. Adjacent is another graveled area, landscaped with raised evergreen beds. A generous lawn wraps around the rear, bordered by post and rail stock fencing and native species hedging that provides a natural boundary before the seemingly endless green fields beyond. Peaceful and serene and a barn house! As always, click to emBIGGERate … |
I love the outside. Inside it needs a little color, maybe some art. At my age, I wouldn't commit to carrying groceries upstairs without an elevator (I live on the third floor, but with elevators.)
ReplyDeleteWith all your colorful art paintings you wouldn't need to paint Travel!!!!!! Let your work be the color!!!
DeleteOMG TWO FOR TWO!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love this one too! Mind you different from last week, but I also like this, and the very clean, uncluttered feel of it. Clean, chic, and yet a tad urban in feel. And the white. The second bedroom is how to do color, without painting.
ReplyDeleteLOVE the main floor and those steel buttresses are so cool and unique. I have never seen curved steel ones done like that. And the black counters all that beautiful wood tone floor. It's big, but not so crazy. I absolutely love this. And it appears to be way out, so all the houseboys can frolic naked without complaints.
I LOVE the arched ceilings with the steel frames. Some simple elegance in the interior. Exterior is fascinating but I think needs more landscaping. I like this very much, although it’s not singing to me (yet).
ReplyDeleteThe Black exterior is an immediate fail. The steel arches are nice, but I'd never see them because I'd never walk in the front door... or the back door... or any door.
ReplyDelete😃 Bob, you had me at "larch-clad!" I could have a home that is surrounded by a classic Monty Python sketch! "The Larch"

🥰 And, love at first sight. Most of barn rebuilds you show are a bit too rambling for my taste. This beauty is tight, compact and relaxing...I'll take it! 👍
I like this one except it could be a little bit cheerier on the outside , Black doesn't do it for me. I'd go with a brighter color. I wouldn't go with red, either! Barn or not, I'm not that unimaginative!
ReplyDeleteThat aerial shot makes it look like a rural mailbox. But I love the interior. The white with the black steel - awesome. The white walls allow accessories and art to provide the color. Those windows! Yeah, I could live there, but I'd need an elevator.
ReplyDeleteI don't like the exterior, but there's plenty of space and light inside.
ReplyDeleteI like everything about this one!
ReplyDeleteSimply-I love it-Clean and simple-I like the floor arrangement-The outside is wonderful and peaceful-I could create a great outdoor space for relaxation and guests-The only thing that I do not like is ALL the black-I am over the black trend-I don't mind a little here and there but not the main focus-I can add color to the interior with art and textiles-That would be a joy-A blank canvas-
