Architecture Wednesday: Catskills Schoolhouse

The five-acre property includes a small cottage and a stunning main building—a yurt built by hand in the mid- 1970s which served as a pre-school.

The couple that bought the old school had a vision for the main building, dubbed the Octagon, and turned it into large, main living spaces with a kitchen tucked off to one side and a small study tucked into another; bedrooms and baths were added on to the same floor, and then downstairs as well. I love the yurt and the open ceilings with the skylight smack dab in the middle; I love a good black house; and I love the setting.

Peaceful.

  1. I'm not into open floor plans at all. That being said, the ceiling's nice, but I'm wondering how difficult it is to clean the skylight.

    1. To me, it's just the living room and dining room that are open; the kitchen is in an alcove along the side

    1. I wonder if the sink is left from when the building was a school?

  3. Oh, that is VERY cool. I love the beams in the ceiling and the fact that they repurposed the old structure rather than just tearing it down.

OMG!! You had me at schoolhouse!! And then, you had me at open floorplan! And then, you had me at photos of the dome! And then, you had me at colors of tile in the kitchen! And then........I'm home! Does the cute Boston Terrier come with? 🥰

    1. I wonder if a dog is ever negotiated into the sales price? First time for everything!

  7. Mount Tremper, New York. Little over a two hour drive-South-to Manhattan. Love the location of the property and the surroundings. Great for watching the seasons roll in.

I would pick a different color for the exterior but can live with it for now. Yes, yes, I know you love a good black house. I keep waiting for the trend to subside and die out. The interiors are perfect. Gives me a light and airy feeling. The colors are something I could go along with. I love the yurt right in the middle and everything branching off. That bathroom sink is to die for. I know I would feel comfortable here.

  10. I would like it better if it were a more substantial dog in the photos, such as a nice Collie or a Shepherd, even a Bouvier or Doodle of some sort. A hound would be good, too. I'm not into those little overbred bulldogs that are so popular.

    Love,
    Janie
