Ian Charleson [left] told the theater company he was
recovering from sinus surgery when he was actually dying of AIDS and had just
agreed to play Hamlet at the National Theatre. The part became available after
Daniel Day-Lewis walked off the stage mid-run, collapsing during the scene
where Hamlet meets his father's ghost; Day-Lewis later claimed he had seen his
own ghost. So, Ian Charleson took over,
and outside a few close friends only the director, Richard Eyre, knew what it
was costing him to stand up there.
He opened on 13 November 1989 and actor Ian McKellen was in
the audience that night and so overwhelmed by Charleson’s Hamlet that gifted Charleson
his own Best Actor award. But after that first night Charleson never appeared
on a stage again. He died eight weeks later, on January 6, 1990 at age 40.
But this isn’t about his brilliant performance it was about
what he did after he died, something nobody in Britain was doing in 1990:
he left instructions that his cause of death, AIDS, be made public and his was
the first show business death in the country openly attributed to AIDS.
A hero and an icon even in death.
American audiences know Charleson from Chariots of Fire,
where he played Eric Liddell, the Scottish runner who wouldn't race on Sundays.
And now Andrew Scott [right], an out gay actor and quite a handsome fella, is
playing him now in Elsinore, the story of Charleson’s life and death, which
opens in London in October and reaches US theaters in November. |
Ugh
ReplyDeletePeople who do not follow the rules of the road annoy me to no end. Especially with emergency vehicles!
And people in South Dakota did elect Noem, so nothing surprises me. Jess Piper is right, so South Dakota may elect Noem again…
And do your neighbors let you bring plus ones? Because I’m gonna need you to invite me to those parties!
XOXO
I am not an offensive driver but I wanna be when I see how some of these fools drive.
DeleteIf I get a Plus One you're it!

I suspect that your fire officers, like ours, are finding fires that have been deliberately set, fires that could end up with some of the brave fire fighters dying. I just find it beyond belief that anyone could do anything so stupid and evil.
ReplyDeleteThat is happening in some place and when they catch those who set the fires the punishments should be severe.
DeleteI pulled over to let an EMS truck get through yesterday, and then cars rushed past me, not allowing me to pull back into traffic. Some days people are rushing to be the next one to the traffic light, or the morgue.
ReplyDeleteI always laugh at the people who fly by me and then I catch up to them at the next light.
DeleteKarma.
I remember reading of Ian Charleson's death was totally stunned. I wonder how much the government paid for those Noem statues. And Hegseth has always been a white supremacist and loser. He and Trump have so much in common, one might think they might be related.
ReplyDeleteNoem has just the one ... of her with a horse. And apparently SD dedicates a statue to every governor of their state.
DeleteDog Killer should be her permanent legacy --- it sounds as if she grifted herself quite the bundle of cash during her stint in the federal gov. Poor thing, though, she's as ugly as sin.
ReplyDeleteShe's as much a criminal as the whole lot. I'd like to see her caged in a detention center.
DeleteThat would be fun.

Omg!!!!!!!! The Noem states cracked me the hell up!!!!!!!!! Although her hubby might get hot to see himself with big tits....and we'll go rub one out!!!!
ReplyDeleteYou and Carlos are something else!
And the country is already fucked up enough without having our food now bad and rotten. These people just don't care.
I wish those made up Noem statues would be created and just left around South Dakota for everyone to see!
DeletePeople are self-centred and getting worse.
ReplyDeleteIt's very much a "Me first" world these days.
DeleteCan't find it, but there is a meme out there referring to the catering truck (or Air Force 1?) as Panda Express, because it just serves up Orange Chicken.
ReplyDeleteWill Jay
I think I saw that meme!
DeleteEl Gato Guapo, Master of Disguise!
ReplyDeleteHe was a true hero of mine!
DeleteNo one should be surprised that Trumpenfuhrer snuck off and left the Air Force 1 crew and Press Pool behind as decoys... he's called them "suckers and losers" and "enemies of the state" respectively for years now!
ReplyDeleteHe also left some members of his Cabinet behind because, you know, who cares about them?
DeleteFire truck rants, missing out on neighbor cake, and Kristi Noem's statue chaos—this post had it all! 🎂 Hope you and Carlos are staying cool in the SC heat!
ReplyDeleteThe heat this week is the worst yet. I am so ready for a break!!
DeleteI didn't know of Charleson, so thanks for mentioning him and what he did at the time of his death.
ReplyDeleteYes, to Mr Ortega. I'm sure he comes with spice.
That was a bold move on Charleson's part!
DeleteAnd Ortega is surely spicy.
Tuxedo knows !
ReplyDeleteHe knows when his master has to be looked after :)

He was a good nurse!
DeleteAnother chock full of info Thursday, sweetpea! Seriously, there's always something new here! Today's favorite (aside from that gorgeous man) is the last item! xoxo
ReplyDeleteThat last one we need to keep reminding ourselves about.
Deletexoxo
Thanks for that item about Ian Charleson. I didn't know that Hamlet story about him. And Andrew Scott will be perfect to play him in "Elsinore."
ReplyDeleteSad story but that last move he made in the papers was epic.
DeleteAndrew Scott is one of my favorite actors.
I don't ever want to see that puppy killing bitch again. It's a good thing people like Tuxedo and Princess are in the world to take care of us and make up for the shit heads.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
Our kids do the best work.
DeleteI do like Noem's "Brazil" statue with the plastic surgeon.
xoxo
I remember watching along a main road here as car after car moved to the left and stopped to let through three screaming ambulances headed for a crash site on the freeway. (we drive on the left here)
ReplyDeleteThat last meme tells quite a story. Is it better yet? Is it better now? No? VOTE BLUE!!
People are too much "Me first" these days.
DeleteNoem is in a park with statues of all other former South Dakota governors. She insisted she be depicted with her horse and they did just that. Ridiculous. Also, this must have been before she shot it (she had to have shot it at some point). Brilliant alternate stateues.
ReplyDeleteBoston drivers were famous for jumping in front of emergency vehicles when they had the chance. I think it’s become more and more common all over the country. Imagine what those drivers would say if they were the one in the ambulance.
Ian Charleson was a great actor and human being.
Antonio Ortega is kind of dreamy.
You're spot on today, Mitchell!
