Located along the historic and legendary Via Appia Antica, about 3 miles from the Colosseum and a 15-minute drive from the heart of Rome, is a fabulous villa, once home to famed film producer Carlo Ponti and Sophia Loren. Designed by renowned Roman architect Busiri Vici, the main villa covers 8600 square feet over two levels, with an elevator connecting the two floors and a panoramic rooftop terrace. There are five bedrooms each with a private bathroom, powder room, library, a winter garden and a room with a bathroom reserved for service personnel … cuz you know I’d be needing service personnel, AKA Maddie-speak for Houseboys. The heart of the residence is a majestic 3500-square-foot hall, divided into three interconnecting rooms with large windows, three fireplaces and views of the garden. The entire area is decorated with statues and original marble artifacts—some of which are over 2,400 years old—giving the house a museum-like atmosphere of great charm and cultural depth. The main house stands on a layer of solidified lava from the nearby volcano of Castel Gandolfo, in an area that was excavated by the ancient Romans to extract basalt used in the construction of the Appian Way. The excavation created a kind of natural amphitheater that elevates the villa nearly fifty feet above the surrounding landscape, offering a dominant position over the gardens. In is within that garden where you’ll find a second structure: a 7500-square-foot Provencal-style building that was once a stable and has been transformed into an elegant and bright residence. The heart of the space is a large 3400-square-foot open loft with high ceilings, large windows, a professional kitchen and period furnishings selected from unique Italian and Northern European pieces, ideal for private receptions, events or family time. The garden, which covers an impressive 150,000 square feet is a true masterpiece of landscaping, personally designed and maintained by the current owner, a landscape architect. Outdoor spaces include a swimming pool, mature trees, stone pathways, private relaxation areas, a garage, technical rooms, a gardeners’ annex, and the ultimate in privacy, while remaining strategically connected to the city’s major neighborhoods, international schools, cultural sites, and the capital’s best restaurants. This is not simply a residence, but an iconic and unrepeatable property that encapsulates the soul of ancient Rome, the elegance of Italian design and the immortal spirit of international cinema. Rich in history and incomparable in its charm, it is a home for those seeking beauty, uniqueness and a legacy to pass on. Available by private appointment only and reserved for selected clients. I don’t know the price because, well, if you have to ask … |
Oh so elegant!
ReplyDeleteIt really is special!
DeleteYou got me!!!!! The Provencal Mediterranean style has always been a favorite on mine. I adore the aged look of the exterior. The inside will do very nicely. That library alone is stunning, as is the outdoor tunneled dining space...with crystal chandelier. That is where all my dinners with guest would be. I don't see a negative with this place at all....and room for the whole stable of my houseboys!!!!
ReplyDeletela dolce vita!!!!
I can just see the houseboys running nekkid and free throughout the property!!
DeleteWhoa.
ReplyDeleteIt’s huge. Five bedrooms, huh?
And LaLoren lived there with Carlo? No wonder.
If I had the dough, I’d snatch it and I’d make it an LGBTQ friendly B&B and I’d show Sofia’s movies in the sunroom.
XOXO
I like your ideas. It could be a great venue for events and such!

Gee.... I think I'm going to have to break into my piggy bank.
ReplyDeletePerhaps several piggy banks!
DeleteThis is stunning.
ReplyDeleteA very special home and property to be sure!
DeleteItaly? Oh, now you're talking my language when it comes to old-world charm and elegance. The only thing that would top it would be an equivalent place in Greece.
ReplyDeleteI do love the history of the home and the town and the country!
DeleteI like it a lot!! That's two in a row, Bobulah! I just might be experiencing the early onset of dementia :)
ReplyDeleteIf I had the coins I'd buy it and gift it to you!
Deletethe dog's mother
ReplyDeletexoxo :-)
It sure is glamorous.
ReplyDeleteIt would take me forever, tho, to Swiffer all of those floors! :)
My guess is if you could afford the house you could afford a team of Swifferers!
DeleteItaly!! The coast!! What a fabulous home. A little too big for me but I can appreciate its beauty. Those stairs look like a killer. I love the open spaces and the light. I am a practical girl. So the upkeep of this home, inside and out, has me clutching my purse. Even if I had the money. I still would not do it.
ReplyDeleteI could turn it into a wedding venue, party house, event space, and live quietly in the main house.
DeleteVery glam! I wonder where La Sophia lives now?
ReplyDeleteDal 1981 nel centro storico di Ginevra, en Svizzera.

Based in Geneva's historic center, Switzerland, since 1981.

It is a very wealthy slice of life!!

Villa d’Autore—a magnificent Roman villa in all its splendor :)
DeletePonti always offered the very best to "La Loren." Without Carlo Ponti, there would be no Sophia Loren.

Lots of Hollywood history in those old villas! A very different lifestyle than most celebrities even today.
C'è tanta storia di Hollywood in quelle vecchie ville! Uno stile di vita molto diverso da quello della maggior parte delle celebrità, anche ai giorni nostri.
My taste in properties is clearly more pedestrian. It's impressive but even if I could afford to ask the price, I wouldn't.
ReplyDeleteThe outdoor areas appeal to me most (of course). :)
I, too, love the property and that giant space to rent out for private events.
DeleteThis is so beautiful and I would love to have it though it is far too big for just one and I don't think my family would move in, they prefer different styles. There is a house here in my city that I pass by on the bus regularly that has a very similar exterior, but the shutters are green. I often wish it was for sale just so I could view the inside online.
ReplyDeleteIt would make a great boutique hotel.
DeleteCrazy and wonderful. I love it. But as you said, if you have to ask...
ReplyDeleteRight? I want someone to buy it so I can go see it.
DeleteBeautiful home, but I think I like the gardener's annex best of all! Sophia Loren came to my work once. Being directly on Lake Geneva they often used our building for interviews, even though it had nothing to do with us. I'm guessing she was in her 60s at that point and I have to admit she was still truly stunning - although I couldn't bear to be stared at and photographed constantly like that (not likely to happen though is it)! My colleague met her in the English Gardens more recently and chatted with her (she introduced herself as Mrs. Ponti and was charming). She's lived in Geneva for many years (tax reasons I suppose) but as it only takes about an hour to get into Italy I'd say she's got the best of both worlds. Beautiful home and beautiful woman!
ReplyDeleteI like that giant kitchen dining area myself, and of course the gardens.
DeleteLoren is still got that something!
This will do quite nicely, although I’m not sure it’s quite big enough.
ReplyDeleteYou'd never have to leave your property for your walks!
