Architecture Wednesday: Dolly Parton’s Songwriting Retreat

Well, look here … for just $786K you could own a piece of country music history: Dolly Parton’s former Idyllwild retreat! Oh, if walls could sing, this charming three-story, three-bedroom, three-bath 1800 square foot mountain cabin  would be in tune for anyone.

Recently owned by the one and only Dolly, this home is as full of character as the Queen of Country herself. It has a primary suite, a guest bedroom, and a spacious loft that sleeps five—and it was Dolly’s favorite spot to write and play her music.

Nestled along a peaceful seasonal creek and just a short stroll to town, this private escape offers the perfect mix of tranquility and convenience. Designed with chalet-style flair, this home features soaring, wood-beamed ceilings, woodsy details, and a spacious deck where you can soak in the forest views. A brand-new roof ensures it’s ready for its next chapter, while the serene creekside setting adds to its magic. This is more than a home-it’s a piece of music history, a true mountain retreat, and a dream getaway waiting for its next storyteller.

Just don’t try to strum the toilet seat.

  1. I adore Dolly, and it didn't surprise me she liked a lot of WOOD!!!!! As I love nature and the idea if being out living near nothing romances me more and more...this would be perfect and a good size for me too. I only like big when it comes to one thing, lol! Love the decking levels and the open staircase with craved out woods effect. Very nice. But I would have to calm all that wood down and only use it in certain places like accents walls and textured ceiling. No offense Dolly.

But the guitar seat would HAVE TO STAY as an ode to her.

    1. The guitar seat kills me, but it would stay! And I little paint in places would make it less woody!

  2. Oh, babes.
You had me at Dolly. This would be perfect for retirement. That’s a LOT of wood, though. That would be the only thing. And I like me some wood…

    XOXO

  3. It's homely and welcoming, though some of the wood would have to go.

  6. Despite it being Dolly's (love her!), this one is way too rustic and too woody for me.

  7. I love it! The rock that it is built into is amazing, and other than a few cosmetic changes, it is perfect. I'd be so happy there, I'm sure.
What really struck me is that the property isn't over the top, it's not what I might assume a superstar would live in.

    1. Well, it is just a songwriting retreat. I imagine Dolly has [several] fancy homes!

  8. It is a major change of style for me, but I could do that. I am surprised by how modest the kitchen and baths are (well other than the $15,000 refrigerator.)

    1. I gathered that she bought the place quite a few years ago and just used it as a retreat so she kept it simple??

  10. Way too much wood! That can be fixed, though. Otherwise, I love it! I adore the toilet seat.

I couldn't deal with the location and that is an insane amount of wood but it is a bargain.

🤔 Too much country.🪕 Not near enough rock 'n' roll!! 🎸 Love Dolly, not her interior design skills. I can handle this woody if I add bold colors and designs. Enough with the braided rugs and grandma quilts and country chintz upholstery everywhere! And not one piece of rustic and woodgrain furniture!! 🪵The walls are already woodgrain; how's about some diversity?! 🤪
I would keep the guitar toilet seat for a conversation piece...and so I can name-drop Dolly. 🤩
The one thing that leaves me confused is on that relaxing big porch. That large green drape is there for a reason, I s'pose, but what? Is there a public road out there and it's a privacy cloak? 🤷‍♀️
    All in all, 👍😃

    1. I think this was old school Dolly from the 70s.
I got the feeling that the lots are kind of small, and maybe the curtains keep the neighbor out of Dolly's bid-ness!

  18. I love Dolly Parton so I want to say I like this, and the size and layout is great, but there is far too much wood panelling for me. I'd be sick of it in a week.

  19. Wow! A place that's less than a million bucks is a nice change. It's cozy and comfortable. I'd want to make a couple of changes but the guitar toilet definitely stays.
