Architecture Wednesday: Hoot Owl Ranch

This modern home is actually a redesign of a 1958 homesteader’s property in Yucca Valley, in the California desert near Joshua Tree.

The three-bedroom, three bath ranch house sits on nine acers and was created to blur the boundaries between indoors and out via a peaked roof, open floor plan, abundant windows, and the creative upcycling of salvaged wood from the original structure.

It’s a simple plan, with a primary suite, secondary bedroom, and a bunkroom, along with open main floor living, dining and kitchen. Outside, under the patio cover is an additional living and dining area, with a hot tub around the back of the house.

Not for sale, but is for rent in case you’d like a California desert getaway …

  2. Oh, I love the scenery in view through the windows. I could definitely enjoy a long bath while looking out at the view.

  3. I bet the 1958 homesteader would hardly recognize the place! But it is amazing and the views are wonderful.

  5. Oh my God it looks like a set off The Walking Dead. No no no no no this one has too much Southwestern Flair for me. And I'm not even into that locale. Definitely do not like desert escapes. This looks like one of those times you have in the Apocalypse. LOL!

    1. I love the desert but would rather an adobe or Pueblo-style home. This does give off end-of-the-world vibes.

  6. I need trees! I need flowers! I need greenery! I need a five-foot fake fichus or ten! Beige is not a color. In other words, nope.

    1. You got a desert house, you have to have a bunkroom; you don't have to sleep in them.

Says Good Ol' Bunkhouse Bob, the notorious pass around, to the contingent of houseboys on loan from Mistress Maddie 😮

  8. Ever practical, what does one do when one wants to bathe but all the occupants of the bunkbeds are out and about? I like my privacy. Also, I do believe that is a slight exaggeration calling that a hot tub. More like a big warm bucket.

Other than that, it would be a fun rental for a 3 day weekend. Yucca Valley gets old pretty quick.

    1. The bathtub is inside the primary suite so you'd have your privacy ... if that's what you want? 😉

  9. It's very Instagrammable. The furniture and accents are very of today. It's very pretty but I feel it lacks some soul. Don't get me wrong. I love me some Scandi but sometimes it's just too much. Love the location. Wish they had landscaped MORE.

    XOXO

    1. I kinda like it, and I love the all-natural landscape. Less work, more fun times!

  10. I love the setting, and parts of the house. The mix of materials looks expensive, and cheap in the same space. A $2,000 toilet, and a plywood box in leu of a finished cabinet, sealed plywood and painted concrete brick and $4,000 in ovens. My profile of the person who had this built, is they live in luxury, but wanted something rustic, no matter what is cost.

    1. I agree; and I think your profile is spot on.

  11. That first photo makes the setting look rather bleak. In other photos, the exterior is more interesting. The interior is too spartan for me. If everyone who's there with me is outside, I definitely don't want to be on display when I take a bath. Someone might become ill at the sight of my boobs that have headed toward my knees as I've aged.

    Love,
    Janie

  12. I love the desert, so would love that but this is not my style of desert abode. Too cowboy for me. And many of the wood surfaces look too much like plywood.

    1. I'd love a Pueblo style Adobe home; there's some character there. This is nice, but too sleek and modern for me.
