Speak Out!!!

In the 1920s and early 1930s Martin Niemöller, a prominent Lutheran pastor in Germany, sympathized with many Nazi ideas and supported radically right-wing political movements. But after Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933, Niemöller became an outspoken critic of Hitler’s interference in the Protestant Church. He spent the last eight years of Nazi rule, from 1937 to 1945, in Nazi prisons and concentration camps.

Niemöller is perhaps best remembered for this postwar statement:

First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist

Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist

Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist

Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew

Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me

And that, one of my favorite poems, brings me to today, and a twist on Niemöller’s words:

First he came for the Mexicans, riding down a golden escalator and calling them drug dealers, thieves, rapists and murderers

And I did not speak out

Because I was not Mexican

Then he came for transgender people

And I did not speak out

Because I was not trans

Then he came for women, and their right to control their bodies

And I did not speak out

Because I was not a woman

Then he came for Haitians, saying they eat dogs and cats

And I did not speak out

Because I was not Haitian

Then he came for Puerto Rico, a US territory, standing in silence as a comic called it a garbage dump

And I did not speak out

Because I am not from Puerto Rico

Then he came for journalists and anyone who speaks against him … and then he came for Americans he dubbed “the enemy within,” and threatened to unleash the police and military on Americans … and he came for anyone who is “other”

And I knew I had to speak out before he came for me

And there would be no one left to speak up

Speaking out helps; speaking out let’s others who feel what you’re feeling know they are not alone. But, we all know, speaking out is not enough.

We know we have to vote to keep a dangerously, unhinged, incompetent, racist, rapist, misogynist, traitor and liar from any position of power.

  1. Not surprisingly, today's Christians don't know that Hitler believed in an Aryan Nation, not a Christian God. This is what happens when you keep people stupid.

  2. We voted Blue from top to bottom. That was the assignment. We aced it. Now we shall see how many others turned in their homework with the correct answers.

  4. I remember that powerful statement and your version is spot on. We've been speaking up and voting and I hope it makes a difference. You've done a good job of speaking up in your posts, Bob. Thank you.

  5. I always wonder at the lack of empathy of many people, that only changes to concern whenever the target moves from someone else to them. The "enemy within" that IQ45 speaks of, is anyone who disagrees with him and that leaves out only a few of the most die-hard MAGAts.
Based on the latest numbers regarding early voting and women versus men, I'll be waiting, watching and hoping for good news.

  6. Please, Americans, come through for everyone.

  7. You have tried so hard to get this simple message across to the American people. Let us hope that the enlightened are more numerous than the ignorant.

  8. I absolutely loved this. Your poem and Niemöller's poem perfectly illustrate why the felon must lose this election.

Not a single red vote on my ballot. I am ever so hopeful there are enough enlightened souls in America that will have the spine to tell the orange fuckoff to shove it. I hope he only has prison time to look forward to!

  10. That's nice work and it's quite true. I think we have all stayed silent at times when we should have spoken up.

  11. My ballot was nothing but blue. I've appreciated your posts ever since I started following you. You help me stay informed. Now we wait. I wonder how many days.

    Love,

  12. I'll be watching some results with CC Democratic headquarters and then joining my sister, David Dust at our watering hole to see more results. I suspect I'll get no sleep tomorrow night at all.

  13. Ohhh
You have no idea how many times I've heard/read that and I had no idea when it came from. It makes sense, though...
And we do need to speak up when it comes to the Nazi MAGAts. Because fascism would affect all of us.

    XOXO
