John Boehner, Weeper of the House, on an ENDA [Employment Non-Discrimination Act] vote:
"I am opposed to discrimination of any kind, in the workplace and any place else. But I think this legislation that I’ve dealt with as chairman of The Education and The Workforce Committee…is unnecessary and would provide a basis for frivolous lawsuits. People are already protected in the workplace. I’m opposed to continuing this. Listen, I understand people have differing opinions on this issue, and I respect those opinions. But as someone who’s worked in the employment law area for all my years in the State House and all my years here, I see no basis or no need for this legislation."
Currently, people can still be fired simply for being gay in 29 states.
That’s not being protected.

Jay Nixon, governor of Missouri, coming out for same-sex marriage and announcing that Missouri will accept joint tax returns from same-sex couples married in other states:
“Many Missourians, including myself, are thinking about these issues of equality in new ways and reflecting on what constitutes discrimination. For me, that process has led to the belief that we shouldn’t treat folks differently because of who they are.”

"I don't believe we ought to discriminate against people because of their sexual orientation. If people are in a same-sex relationship and they want their partner to be able to have health benefits or be designated as a beneficiary on their life insurance, there's no reason we shouldn't do that. I also don't support amending the constitution on this issue. I do believe it's an issue that got to be left up to the states. I do believe in the traditional definition of marriage. Listen, I love Mary very much. I love her family very much. This is just an issue on which we disagree."

"This is an issue we have dealt with privately for many years, and we are pained to see it become public. Since it has, one this should be clear, Liz has always believed in the traditional definition of marriage. I don’t like Cheney, I think he is evil incarnate, but, BUT, when even Dick Cheney can come down on the side of equality, then his daughter should be able to so as well.
This just reeks of Daddy trying to help his baby girl win political office; at the expense of his other child, you know, the gay one.
