Chasten Buttigieg, husband of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, describing his struggles growing up gay in a small town:

“When I was growing up in conservative rural Michigan, I thought I was the only gay person in the world. I thought something was twisted and wrong with me. I thought something in my DNA was compromised, and I spent 18 years of my life hating this fact about me [but] when you embrace the qualities about yourself that make you weird or make you different or make you feel like you stand out from the crowd, you start to see what actually makes you truly powerful and unique and beautiful. [You see] you’re not defined by the opinions of other people.”

You make yourself; other people don’t get to create you and put you in a box of their making. You make yourself, and once you learn that, and become all right with yourself and who you are, the rest of the world falls away.

Marjorie Taylor Greene, racist and traitor to America, telling reporters that at a recent New York City protest rally against Thing 45, Democrat Congressman Jamaal Bowman was “shouting at the top of his lungs, cursing, calling me a horrible—calling me a white supremacist;”

“That is like calling a person of color the N word which should never happen. Calling me a white supremacist is equal to that and that is wrong. I think there’s a lot of concern about Jamaal Bowman, so and I am concerned about, I feel threatened by him. He not only let a mob there, but his boisterous lies. Hey Marge, being called a white supremacist only bothers you because it’s true. And, just so you know, it is nothing like using the n-word. Nothing. You’re offended because it was a person of color who called you a white supremacist because he sees you, and hears your words, and knows what they mean.

So it might be better if you simply STFU.

Anyone who’s interacted with me, anyone knows me, even reported this, you know, I’m middle school principal energy, always loving and engaging and friendly, except when kids [are] killed in our streets. Everyone should be outraged about that. But she knows what she’s doing when she does that, and unfortunately white supremacists historically, this is what they do. They try to dehumanize Black people, black skin and black humanity so that they could be you know, more likely to be targeted for harm.”

She says what we all know: that young people ... whom she thinks are ignorant lemmings ...  will vote against the GOP until they get married and get old. What poor Kellyanne forgets is that there will always be young people voting, so maybe rethink your policies and try collaborating with women and minorities and the LGBTQ+ community and immigrants and such.

Chasten Buttigieg, on Michael Elizabeth Pence’s homophobic and misogynistic “joke” about Pete Buttigieg taking “maternity” leave after the birth of his children:

“The thing about what he said is, it flies in the face of what he says he is. He says he’s a family values Republican, so I don’t think he’s practicing what he preaches. But it’s part of a much bigger trend: attacking families. And it wasn’t just about attacking the LGBTQ community, because someone wrote this [joke] and he checked it and purposely said, ‘maternity leave’ rather than ‘paternity leave,’ but also, it’s a bigger conversation about the work that women do in families, right?  … I think is a pretty misogynistic view, especially from a man who just last year said that we should be supporting more people who adopt. And you know, I spoke up for two reasons. One, I’m always going to stick up for my family, especially my kid. I know we all struggle to find a balance between work and family life and I’ve never seen someone work harder than my husband to find that balance. But I think Republican or Democrat, we can all agree that when your child, our prematurely born child, barely five pounds, when your kid is connected to a ventilator, you don’t want to be anywhere but at their bedside. So watching Gus in the hospital, for anyone who has ever experienced having a child in the ICU, when their tiny little hand is gripping around your finger. You know, I would watch Pete have to peel Gus’ fingers back and duck into the little bathroom in his room so he could do a Zoom with a virtual background so nobody would see that he’s in the hospital. The other reason I spoke up is because, like I mentioned, we all have an obligation to hold people accountable for when they say something wrong, especially when it’s misogynistic, especially when it’s homophobic. And I just don’t take that when it when it’s directed at my family.”

Let’s be clear, Michael Elizabeth Pence cares about children of straight white people, and that’s all. And, as Pete said, when asked about the “joke,” he was shocked because just the week before he’d met Pence and Pence specifically asked how his children were doing.

So, clearly this “joke” was meant for his base of haters and homophobes and misogynists, and Michael Elizabeth Pence won’t ever apologize because he’s a spineless asshat.

Antony Blinken, US Secretary of State, rips FIFA over their ban on Rainbow armbands:

“It’s always concerning … when we see any restrictions on freedom of expression. It’s especially so when the expression is for diversity and for inclusion, and in my judgment, at least no one on a football pitch should be forced to choose between supporting these values and playing for their team.”

FIFA should have never let the games be played in a country rooted in anti-LGBTQ+ hatred. It's the "little" things like telling athletes they can't wear an LGBTQ+ ally patch that spurs on bigots with guns to shoot us dead; the hatred starts somewhere and this ruling by FIFA is partially to blame.

Their list of targets is growing' ... that was a couple months ago … ‘Doctors under threat from far-right activists for providing trans care' ... ‘Boston Children’s Hospital faces bomb threat after right-wing harassment campaign’ ... there were three of those bomb threats … ‘FBI charges Massachusetts woman with Boston Children’s Hospital bomb threats’ ... so they found one of the people … ‘At least 20 Republican politicians have claimed that schools are making accommodations for students who identify as cats' ... That was before the midterms. Here are three more from my colleagues in the last three weeks … ‘As election nears some conservative groups have ramped up anti-trans campaign ads’ … ‘Far right figures appear to be testing Twitter’s boundaries for anti-LGBTQ speech’ … ‘GOP senator targets Tiktok influencer with anti-transgender taunt.' And I’m just wondering, what could I have done different? Seriously, as reporters what can we do different? Because there are five dead people in a strip mall—because that was the only place they felt safe, as gay or trans people in … Colorado Springs. And I am trying to thread this needle here. I’m trying to say that this is happening. This targeted stuff has real life impacts.”

The media needs to cover this for what it is: mass murder. And they need to call out those who perpetuate hate which leads to mass murder. And they need to call out every single Republican who, after any other mass shooting, offers “thoughts and prayers” to the victims, but after the murder of LGBTQ+ Americans, they stay silent.

Be Like Chasten

A lot of us in the LGBTQ+ community have been subjected to slurs and name-calling, and a lot of us have turned the other cheek, thinking it would do no real good to call out the homophobes and haters.

But times have changed with social media, and the idea that homophobes and bigos and haters can call you names from the comfort of their own mother’s basement, and some of us still choose to do nothing.

Enter Chasten Buttigieg. A homophobic troll left an insulting comment on a photo of Chasten and his family, and Chasten didn’t let him get away with it.

Last week, Chasten posted that photo with his husband and Secretary of Transportation, Pete Buttigieg, and their twins, Penelope Rose and Joseph August, at the White House, posting:

“2021 brought with it many challenges, but it also gave us a lot to be grateful for. Happy New Year, friends. Here’s to a peaceful and joyful 2022!”

Most people who commented loved the photo of the happy family, but some didn’t and one, Andre Kravchenko, left a nasty comment:

“Someone actually gave these [censored] kids??? Holy [censored].”

Note: Chasten, who posted a screenshot of the censored comment—though I imagine we all know what words were used—wrote:

“In the year 2022, you’d think these people would be wise enough to post their homophobia from an alt account, not one easily connected to their job. Rather embarrassing for @americanhomes4rent, a company that claims to be an equal housing provider and one that’s ‘building a culture of inclusion and belonging.’ I worry for your tenants.”

And that sent Buttigieg supporters posting comments on posts by American Homes 4 Rent calling out their homophobic employee, which prompted the company to issue a statement emphasizing its commitment to diversity and inclusion and clarifying that despite what it said on Kravchenko’s LinkedIn profile, he has not worked for the company for over five years.

Kravchenko was actually employed by Seattle company Skyline Properties, who at first issued a statement that Chasten did not approve of:

“To all who are posting, Skyline could not possibly know what 1,200 of our independent contractors could be doing at any given moment. There is no way on gods green earth that you, me air [sic] anyone else could know in advance what someone might think or post. Now that I am aware of the post I will have a conversation with the broker. Thank our for letting me know.”

Oh, do not come for Chasten Buttigieg like that: he posted the comment and said:

“This defensive response tells us exactly how that ‘conversation’ is going to go.”

After that the Skyline Instagram account released a more official statement:

“After spending time to properly review the comments made by this individual, we have found that this was not some fluke, mistake, or hacking situation, and have promptly FIRED him from Skyline Properties. That being said, we would like to sincerely apologize to the Buttigieg family and the LGBTQ+ community for any harm that came from the bigotry of this individual. We do not tolerate ANY hate speech of any kind, nor do we have a place for ANY brokers who participate in such hateful behaviors. We must be as clear as possible when we say we have zero tolerance towards this behavior.”

And that’s how you stand up to bigots and their hate speech. Anyone can feel however they choose about the LGBTQ+ community, or People of Color, or Jews or Muslims, or … whomever. But when you post that kind of hate-filled speech, there will be consequences.

Speech is free, but the consequences can cost.

Bobservations

I don’t have a Carlos Tale this week because he’s been busy working on a translation and has been very quiet. But I do have an example of how I will say just about anything …think Sophia, on The Golden Girls, who had a stroke that affected the part of her brain that censors speech; that’s me.

The other day at work my boss’ son was there and he pulled me aside to ask a question and this is what he said:

“Have you heard any rumors going around?”

“Rumors? Here?”

“Yeah.”

“Well, it’s a small office in a small town. After we get done talking God and guns all that’s left is gossip.”

“Okay. I’m talking about a rumor about a romantic entanglement between a couple of employees.”

"I’m gonna need more. At least one name—”

“Nah, I shouldn’t say a name.”

I got up to walk away and then it hit me. I turned and said:

“Oh my god, are you talking about your dad and me? I mean, it’s cool, your mom knows.”

It was announced yesterday that Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and his husband Chasten are set to become parents, and that lucky baby will be calling Pete “Daddy.”

We are planning to replace the carpet in the house with hard wood floors; this has been an ongoing discussion forEVER but now we are ready. For a while, I wanted really dark floors, and was even thinking of going with an almost Black Bamboo style. But times change and so do I, and I have settled on—in our house, while there is input from all parties, I make the design and paint choices because even Carlos says I am better at it—three samples:

Ivory White Bamboo—we love that it’s a sustainable product, and very durable with pets and such. I love the lightness to it.

Natural Hickory—looks very typical in hardwood flooring [a negative in my book] but I love the gray tones, which pick up the gray walls in the living room.

Saddle Hickory—is a bit darker than we liked, and the planks are only about three inches wide, but I like the gray tones in this one, too.

We have a couple of other places to look at, and then we’ll decide, replacing the carpeted living room and hallway, and the :::ak::: parquet in the dining room.

I don’t know about that—though I wouldn’t be surprised if it was proven true—but I do know that Boebert, in the wake of the Taliban taking over Afghanistan, Tweeted out the following, before deleting it:

Down in Florida, the Hillsborough County School Board will hold an Emergency School Board Meeting to discuss the best way to mitigate against the spread of the Delta Variant.

The Illinois Second District Appellate Court has ruled Hobby Lobby Stores Inc. violated state anti-bias laws by denying a transgender woman employee access to the women’s bathroom:

“[Meggan] Sommerville is female, just like the women who are permitted to use the women’s bathroom. The only reason that Sommerville is barred from using the women’s bathroom is that she is a transgender woman, unlike the other women [at least, as far as Hobby Lobby knows.]”

The ruling upheld a $220,000 judgment for emotional distress and attorneys’ fees against the company.

Barack Obama, on the GQP standing in line to support the Big Lie:

Sorry, Mr. president, but you’re acting as if those GOP Senators and Congressman care more about their country than they do their own wallets, and they don’t.
