Vote. Vote Blue. And Here's Why, AGAIN!

It’s been a few weeks since we checked in on the GOP and their special brand of bigotry and ignorance, so let’s dive right in …

NORTH DAKOTA

The state GOP voted last week to raise their own meal reimbursements to $45 a day. This happened less than two weeks after that same state GOP blocked a bill to provide free school lunches to low-income students.

Tell me again how the GOP is pro-family or pro-children.

 TENNESSEE

GOP lawmakers have expelled two Democrat Representatives, Justin Jones and Justin Pearson, from the House for taking part in a peaceful demonstration for gun reform that was staged in the aftermath of a Nashville school shooting that left six people dead. A third Democrat, Gloria Johnson, was barely saved from expulsion.

Of note, the two Democrats expelled were two Black men, while the white woman was saved.

FLORIDA

Ron DeSantis signed HB 543 into law this week that will allow Floridians to carry a concealed firearm without the need for a permit. People can now carry concealed firearms without going through the background screening and training that is currently required to have a concealed carry license.

More guns. Less control.

IDAHO

The state legislature has passed the nation’s first law that makes it illegal for minors to travel out-of-state to get an abortion without parental consent.

Idaho already has a near-total abortion ban in place but neighboring Washington and Oregon allow minors to get an abortion without their parent’s consent, so Idaho will restrict its residents from interstate travel for abortion access.

Why not just lock up all pregnant women until they give birth?

FLORIDA

A survey finds that among Florida’s incoming college freshmen, dissatisfaction with Governor Ron DeSantis’s education policies runs deep … deep enough in some cases to make them look for college opportunities in another state.

Intelligent.com surveyed over 1,000 Florida students, including 783 still in high school and 364 current undergrads and found that 91% of prospective college students disagree with the governor’s policies and that 1 in 8 graduating high school students won’t attend college in Florida due to education policy in the state.

Florida will become a ghost town save for the elderly and the fascists.

MISSOURI

The Missouri House has put forth new budget bills that would eliminate state funding for libraries across the state. The House Budget Committee has proposed to cut the entire $4.5 million budget slated for Missouri libraries last week after the American Civil Liberties Union [ACLU] filed a lawsuit to overturn a new Missouri law that bans “explicit sexual” images from all school materials, including library books. The law, passed last year, does not apply to written descriptions of sex or sexual acts; only photos, drawings, videos and other visual depictions are prohibited but librarians and other school officials face up to a year in jail or a $2,000 fine for violating the policy.

It might be easier just to ban all books.

MONTANA

Republicans in the state Legislature are trying to change the rules for next year’s Senate primary to make it easier to defeat Democrat Senator Jon Tester and win back the Senate majority.

A bill moving through the statehouse would change the structure of the election from the party primary system currently in place to a jungle primary in which the top two vote-getters advance to the general election regardless of party. The move would essentially box out Libertarian candidates who would likely vote Democrat ensuring a GOP victory.

If they can’t win fairly, they change the rules and cheat.

MISSOURI

State Attorney General Andrew Bailey has issued an emergency regulation regarding gender transition interventions on minors and launched a website to report allegations of malpractice at gender clinics in the state:

“It’s about protecting children for me. We’ve got to inject some sanity into this conversation. Gender is an objective reality defined by biology, in the same way that gravity is an objective reality. It is unhealthy to deny objective reality.”

He really only cares about cis gender children, to be fair. Trans kids are less than.

FLORIDA

As happens in fascist states, the rules are changed to enable the fascist to do as they please.

This week the Florida Senate scheduled a change via committee vote of the “Resign to Run” law.

This is certainly meant to allow Ron DeFascist to keep his job as governor should he fail in his attempt to take the White House in 2024.

ON THE UPSIDE …

SCOTUS

This week the U.S. Supreme Court refused to intervene in an ongoing case involving West Virginia’s law banning transgender girls from participating in girls’ sports teams at school. Conservative Justices Samuel Alito and the hopefully soon-to-be-impeached and removed from the bench Clarence Thomas dissented.

The court’s action came on its “shadow docket” so-called because decisions are made without full briefing or argument and decided with little or no explanation.

Some 19 states have enacted laws like West Virginia’s anti-transgender law but no appeals court has yet ruled on the question.

WISCONSIN

Last week voters gave control of the state’s highest court to liberals for the first time in 15 years after Milwaukee County Judge Janet Protasiewicz defeated former Supreme Court Justice Dan Kelly in a race that served as a referendum on the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

The tide is changing in Wisconsin; let’s hope that trend keeps moving forward.

NEW JERSEY

Democrat Governor Phil Murphy signed Executive Order No. 326 establishing New Jersey as a safe haven for gender-affirming health care by directing all state departments and agencies to protect all persons, including health care professionals and patients, against potential repercussions resulting from providing, receiving, assisting in providing or receiving, seeking, or traveling to New Jersey to obtain gender-affirming health care services.

“Across the nation, we are witnessing attacks led by certain states that seek to undermine the equality, dignity, and safety of the LGBTQIA+ community, especially transgender and non-binary youth. As leaders, our greatest responsibility is ensuring that every person we represent, regardless of their gender identity or gender expression, is entitled to respect, fairness, and freedom. We will continue to uphold these principles in New Jersey and support every person’s right to live freely and authentically by making our state a safe haven for those seeking or providing gender-affirming health care.”

Finally at least one safe haven for our trans brothers and sisters.

Pay attention … vote … speak up … vote … because if we don’t all stand together one day all of this country will be like Florida and Tennessee and Missouri and Idaho, and the GOP and the traitors come for us all.

These really are the easiest posts to compile because there are dumb people everywhere and it seems they are all trying to out-dumb one another with fear and loathing, but there are some bright spots, and given this is Pride Month, it’s especially nice there most are LGBTQ+ … so here goes:

MASSACHUSETTS

Rayla Campbell, the GOP nominee for Secretary of State, said this at the state Republican convention:

“You can’t just sit and say, ‘Oh, that’s terrible. Maybe somebody else will take care it. Oh, that’s not so nice.’ Well, I don’t think it’s so nice when [teachers are] telling your five-year-old that he can go suck another five-year-old’s dick, do you? This is what they’re doing!”

And uttered without a shred of proof.

MISSOURI

GOP Representative Billy Long, a candidate for Senate, has a bizarre new plan to get Thing 45 reinstated to office.

He says that he will get Vice President Kamala Harris to resign, and then he have President Biden appoint Thing 45 as vice president, and then have Biden himself resign, putting Thing 45 first in line to ascend to the presidency.

Seriously, he thinks this might work.

LOUISIANA

The Louisiana House approved two anti-abortion bills that restricts access to abortions.

One makes it a crime to sell abortion pills through the mail, while the second closes every abortion clinic in the state, criminalizes most pregnancy termination actions, and sends physicians who perform the procedures to prison.

I really want the mistress of just one GOP politician to come forward and talk about the abortion she had at the behest of her anti-abortion lover.

OHIO

House Republicans passed a bill to ban all transgender students from playing high school and college sports and requires a genital exam in any disputes.

These pigs voted on this bill on the first day of Pride Month.

Hate.

TENNESSEE

Stewart Parks is a GOP candidate for Congress and wants y’all to know that if he’s elected Pride celebrations are done.

“If you elect me, this month will be the last National Gay Pride month ever celebrated. We need to elect people into US congress that will stand up and say Homosexuality and Transgenderism are evil. I will push to have the 2015 Obergefell vs Hodges ruling overturned which legalized same sex marriage … We have to ban it asap and safeguard our children against it. We have to get Transgenderism out of our schools. When I win this election everyone will know their gender again.”

Stew seems a little too enthralled with being gay or trans. I think he has a secret …

GOOD

AMERICA

The Supreme Court has declined to hear an appeal from Boozy and Clod, AKA Mark and Patricia McCloskey, that St. Louis couple who waved guns at a Black Lives Matter protest outside their home in 2020. They are both facing an indefinite suspension of their law licenses.

Sorry, not sorry.

NEW JERSEY

Students and faculty at Passaic Preparatory Academy rallied to show their LGBTQ+ pride after a school board policy prevented them from hoisting a rainbow Pride flag on the flagpole in front of the school.

After students at Passaic Preparatory Academy raised the flag last June for Pride Month, the Board of Education, realizing there was no policy covering which flags could be flown, worked to change that policy into one that allows only an American flag, a New Jersey state flag, or a school flag to be flown.

So, what did the students do? Well, since the law says you cannot fly a Pride flag on the flagpole, the students opted instead to hang Pride flags in every single window, and on every wall in the school.

This is how you do it.

UTAH

The state’s GOP Governor Spencer Cox issued a proclamation marking June as LGBTQ+ Pride Month and calling on Utahns to be more welcoming and accepting of the community:

“This should not be controversial. There should be nothing controversial about supporting a group of people in our state who have historically felt marginalized.”

Cox may be the only Republican governor in the entire country to issue such a proclamation; last year, he issued a similar proclamation, becoming the first Utah governor to officially acknowledge Pride Month.

Good on this Governor.

CALIFORNIA

Years back the Los Angeles Dodgers mistreated Glenn Burke, the first out gay player in Major League Baseball history; this week the team will be honoring Burke’s legacy and his family at its 9th annual Pride Night.

In 1978, the Dodgers traded Burke to the Oakland Athletics because the Dodgers’ general manager, Al Campanis, disapproved of his homosexuality. Campanis ALLEGEDLY tried to hide Burke’s sexuality from the public by offering him $75,000 to get married, to which Burke incredulously replied, “To a woman?!??”

It was particularly insulting to Burke as he had a solid rookie season and helped the team advance to the 1977 World Series. During his time with the Dodgers, Burke was also credited with inventing the high-five as a congratulatory gesture with teammates.

Burke’s stint with the Oakland A’s didn’t go much better after the team’s manager Claudell Washington introduced him to the team with:

“Oh, by the way, this is Glenn Burke. And he’s a faggot.”

Some teammates avoided showering with Burke, and he was released from his contract and sent to a minor league team in Ogden, Utah. After Burke left the sport entirely he moved to San Francisco and played on gay teams, but later fought addiction and died of complications related to HIV in 1995.

Over 40 of Burke’s family and friends are expected to attend the event. During the event, the Dodgers will take a moment to officially honor Burke and the players will wear custom rainbow ballcaps.

Think of how different this all might have been if professional sports wasn’t such a hotbed of homophobia.

Congratulations, Glenn, I’m giving you a high-five right now.

Remember, We The People have to make the Good News happen by speaking up and standing up and shouting out and voting to remove those people from office who are out to harm women, People of Color, and the LGBTQ+ community in their quest to take this country backwards.

BAD

MICHIGAN

Republican Jacky Eubanks, Thing 45’s pick for a state Senate seat. is promising to ban all birth control if elected:

“I guess we have to ask ourselves, would that ever come to a vote in the Michigan state legislature? And if it should, I would have to side with it should not be legal. People believe that birth control—it’s better because then you won’t get pregnant and you won’t need to have an abortion, but I think it gives people the false sense of security that they can have consequence-free sex, and that’s not true and that’s not correct. Sex ought to be between one man and one woman in the confines of marriage.”

Welcome to the 1950s and, please, one reporter, just one, please ask Jacky if she’s ever had sex outside marriage.

WASHINGTON DC

Catherine Glenn Foster, president of the Americans United for Life campaign group, was summoned by the GOP  as an expert witness during a House judiciary committee meeting on access to abortion and said this:

“In places like Washington D.C. [fetuses] are burned to power the lights of the city’s homes and streets. The next time you turn on the light, think of the incinerators.”

She was not questioned about where she gets her facts by any one ion the GOP because … ignorance and fear are the talking points.

VIRGINIA 

GOP Delegate Tim Anderson is threatening to file a restraining order against Barnes and Noble and Virginia Beach Schools to enjoin them from selling or loaning the books Gender Queer and a Court of Mist and Fury because he says they are obscene though neither book fits that definition, and neither book is pornography.

Barnes & Noble has yet to respond to the legal action but, as a private business, they are allowed to sell what they wish to sell and are under no obligation by anyone to move materials out of their facilities.

Still, to the GOP, Gay is Bad.

OKLAHOMA

The state Legislature gave final approval to a bill that prohibits nearly all abortions starting at fertilization, which would make it the nation’s strictest abortion law.

The bill is modeled on one that took effect in Texas, which has relied on civilian instead of criminal enforcement to work around court challenges, but it goes further than the Texas law because it also subjects abortion providers and anyone who “aids or abets” an abortion to civil suits from private individuals.

The GOP will force women to have babies, but not give a damn about the child once its born.

KENTUCKY

The state’s GOP Representative Thomas Massie cast the only vote against a House resolution honoring Jewish Americans’ heritage and denouncing a rise in violence motivated by antisemitism. The resolution passed the House with 420 votes with Massie’s ‘No’ and either Republicans abstaining from voting.

He voted No to simply denounce a rise in Hate Crimes, and ‘No’ against honoring Jewish American’s heritage.

Let that sink in.

NEW JERSEY

GOP State Senator Edward Durr has introduced legislation that would prohibit teachers from bringing LGBTQ-related instruction into classrooms from kindergarten through sixth grade, while students in seventh through 12th grade can “only” be exposed to LGBTQ topics if a parent gives consent.

If the bill is passed, parents would be allowed to sue schools that employ educators who violate the law by incorporating topics such sexual orientation or gender identity into the curriculum without a parent’s consent.

They will freely teach Hate, though.

GOOD

MAINE

When no adults would revive the community Pride parade in Belfast, Maine, a group of motivated Belfast Area High School students stepped up to make sure that the event—which has been on a pandemic hiatus—happens this year.

The city’s first-ever Pride parade and festival took place in 2016, and became an annual tradition, but no adult organizers had come forward this year to keep the tradition going after being canceled for the last two years due to COVID.

So, twenty high school students secured a permit from the city of Belfast, found sponsors, raised money for banners, flags and other expenses and grappled with the procuring of liability insurance.

That’s the future, y’all.

NEW HAMPSHIRE

GOP Governor Chris Sununu announced he would veto a piece of legislation, the “Parental Bill of Rights,” that critics say could require New Hampshire schools to out LGBTQ+ children to their parents.

A Republican with common sense? Who knew?

AMERICA

About two-thirds of Americans say they do not support overturning Roe v. Wade, and also shows that two-thirds of Democrats say the contents of the SCOTUS leak make them more likely to vote in November, as compared to just 40% of Republicans who said so.

This survey showed that voters would cast their ballot in favor of a Democrat in their local congressional district if the election were held today.

Vote Blue!

WYOMING

GOP Senator Cynthia Lummis, a Republican representing Wyoming in the U.S. Senate, speaking at commencements of several schools, including the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Education, and said that “the existence of two sexes, male and female” was a “fundamental scientific truth.”

She was roundly booed by the students, the educated students.

That is also the future, y’all.

Architecture Wednesday: Drumthwacket Estate Dairy Barn

Oh, this one …. I get Ivy League University and Church, with a hint of Old English estate thrown, and a barn, with this house, and I am loving it. But then the doors open and … I am loving it more.

The Drumthwacket Estate, in Princeton, New Jersey was built in 1899, and this particular part of the estate sits on a skosh more than 2 acres, with six bedroom, four full baths and two half baths. But it wasn’t always a grand house; believe it or not, this used to be the Dairy Barn, one of four Tudor brick outbuildings, on the Drumthwacket Estate.

Yes, it’s an outbuilding. But the barn is now a completely modern home, even with barn doors, huge rustic beams, and soaring towers. There are like custom iron staircases—and an elevator—a state-of-the-art Boffi kitchen, and grand living and dining spaces in the old barn, where the ceilings soar to twenty-six feet, with a huge fireplace anchoring the living space.

A mezzanine library separates the private spaces of the top floor, where there are three of the bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a family room. But this section can also be used as just the master bedroom, since there are three more bedrooms baths in the just completed East wing … which means there is also a West wing. That might be where there have the enormous mudroom, 2 clever dorm-style baths, laundry room and the loft space. Oh, and the wine cellar! And the al fresco Moroccan room. And a workshop and offices and art studio and homework space and a gym. With the slate roof restored and brick repointed under current ownership, there’s nothing to do, except maybe add a pool, and it can by yours for a hair under 4 million.

Stories of Pride: Bergen County Arts & Science Charter School Gets An LGBTQ-Inclusive Curriculum

Last May, the Bergen County Arts & Science Charter School [BASCS], a public school that rents space from Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Hackensack, New Jersey, was forced to paint over Keith Haring-inspired mural with interlocking male symbols that were on a wall in a common area also used by church parishioners.

The incident drew criticism from Garden State Equality and others who perceived the landlord dispute as bigoted … because it is … and Nihat Guvercin, chief executive officer of iLearn Schools, which operates BASCS, agreed:

“For years BASCS has successfully operated its school in a church building, complying with the requirements of its lease while also respecting the rights of its students. The curriculum test-pilot will be an opportunity for us to become a leader in this work, to create a model for other public schools. We’re proud to participate with Garden State Equality to do that.”

And now BASCS has been selected as the first school in the state to pilot LGBTQ curriculum. The LGBTQ-Inclusive Curriculum law, passed last year and signed into law by Governor Phil Murphy, requires middle and high schools to teach students about the political, economic, and social contributions of LGBTQ people.

And it’s not just history and inclusion, it’s safety for LGBTQ youth. LGBTQ students were nearly half as likely to experience victimization in schools where inclusive curriculum was available, and reports of homophobic slurs and negative remarks declined across the board since students were more than twice as likely to intervene on another student’s behalf when they witnessed anti-LGBTQ remarks.

And now BASCS has gone from being punished for painting an LGBTQ inclusive mural, to being one of the first schools in the state to have an LGBTQ inclusive curriculum. Maybe these kids will learn about all of the things that LGBTQ people have done for this world, and then realize we’re all very much alike.

Today In Stoopid: Matthew Aimers Ruined The Reception

Matthew Aimers, of Willingboro, New Jersey, has been arrested on suspicion of a string of offenses, including indecent assault, indecent exposure, imprisonment of a minor, simple assault and resisting arrest  at a wedding reception held at the Northampton Valley Country Club in Pennsylvania in November 2018.

Aimer allegedly asked a teenager who was waitressing the event whether she would like to “go outside and make out,” suggesting he would do whatever she wanted. When she rejected his advances, Aimers ALLEGEDLY followed the girl into the women’s bathroom, where he sexually assaulted her and exposed himself. Then he offered her $100 as part of another proposition before she was able to flee the bathroom.

The reception continued  until police were later called to reports of a fight at the club and arrived to find Matthew Aimers “pushing and punching people.” The fight is reported to have broken out after Aimers became aggressive towards a club employee who told him that he couldn’t bring alcohol outside the venue. Aimers ignored police and got into a parked shuttle bus, prompting one officer to board with his Taser drawn. Aimers insulted that officer and attempting to goad him into a fight; following a brief struggle, Matthew Aimer was arrested.

Man, Matthew Aimer knows how to liven up a wedding reception, no? Even his own; yes, it was Matthew Aimer’s wedding day and reception when he decided to rape a teenage girl and assault strangers and the police.

The honeymoon must have been epic … after Aimers posted bail, I mean.

One Scoop of Detergent Equals One Measure of Dignity

When Akbar Cook started as vice principal four years ago at West Side High School in Newark, New Jersey, it was a tough gig. The school was seeing two or three kids every summer killed from gun violence.

“I needed to find a way to save them. It really affected me having my kids killed.”

But it wasn’t just gun violence burdening the school. Two years ago, a 16-year-old student entered through the school’s metal detectors and when the security guards asked to check her bag, the girl screamed at them and threw water at them. She didn’t want anyone to see what was inside her bag … dirty underwear and clothes.

“She was homeless that weekend and didn’t want anyone to know.”

Cook then realized that many students at West Side faced humiliation because they didn't have anything clean to wear; they were often bullied for wearing dirty clothes and some of their fellow snapped photos and tagged the students on social media.

Principal Cook heard the students talking, and he saw the social media posts; he suspected that this bullying was the reason 85% of his students chronically missed school, so this year he has added a new facility in the building: a free laundromat:

"These are kids, good kids who want to learn, that are missing three to five days a month because they were being bullied because they were dirty. I even changed the school uniform to darker colors, so they could go more days without cleaning them, but even with that, students were struggling to have them look clean enough to attend."

Two years ago, Cook applied for a grant from a foundation associated with one of Newark's utility companies—PSE&G.—and received $20,000 to turn an old football locker room into a school laundromat. There are five washers, five dryers and a growing stock of detergent donated from around the country.

The room is open to students free of charge between 3PM and 6PM, with an adult supervisor keeping an eye out during those hours and helps pass on the important life skill of being self-reliant; Principal Cook says:

“We are trying to teach them to navigate their pride. My kids are fighters—they just need good ways to fight for themselves, and then take pride in what they can do."

And sometimes all it takes is a clean shirt and a pair of pants.

Minute Rant: Cop Murders Ex-Wife And Fellow Officers Console Him

Phillip Seidle lives in Neptune Township, New Jersey. In May he and his wife divorced and a nasty custody battle ensued, and last week Phillip Seidle shot his ex-wife in front of their daughter and his co-workers.

Oh, and before I forget, Phillip Seidle has been on the Neptune Township Police force for twenty-two years so those co-workers were fellow police officers.

It all began with Seidle chasing his wife through town in his car — his seven-year-old daughter with him — ended after Tamara Seidle crashed a parked car. Seidle then slammed into her car, got out of his vehicle, took out his service weapon, and began shooting into his ex-wife’s car. He then placed the gun to his own head and paced around the scene, with his daughter still in his car.

This all went down quickly, but Asbury Park police officers — in the area responding to an unrelated car accident — witnessed the events, and were finally able to talk Seidle into letting his daughter out of the car. But, once she was safe, Seidle fired more shots into his ex-wife's car before turning the gun on himself once again and shouting:

“You guys don’t understand. I’m tired of paying alimony. I don’t get to see my children.”

This all happened in the space of half an hour; for thirty minutes police officers watched an armed man rant in the street, shoot his wife to death, threaten to kill himself, and yet they never fired a single shot at him. And so one would wonder if they had done so, would Tamara Seidle have survived, because for thirty minutes she was left bleeding and dying while officers “talked” to Seidle.

Sadly, it gets more disgusting. Police officers were able to convince Seidle to surrender, and at that point several of his fellow officers hugged him and patted him and consoled him, and then allowed a fellow officer to sit by his side in the patrol car on the way back to the station.

Not quite the “rough ride” Freddie Gray took. And the half hour it took to wait out Seidle’s surrender is quite different than the roughly two seconds it took police officers to shoot Tamir Rice to death for brandishing a toy pistol.

And yet people wonder why we are beginning to question who becomes a law enforcement officer?  Why we question their tactics and motives? People are wondering why everyone talks race in these crimes when we see black men shot down in the streets, choked to death in the streets, beaten to death in police vans, but a white police officer who shot his own wife in full view of his colleagues, gets the surrender while his wife dies?

Something is terribly wrong here ….

ISBL Asshat of the Week: Chris Smith

Chris Smith, the Republican Congressman from New Jersey, is the chairman of the Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, Global Human Rights, and International Organizations, so you’d think he’d have a heart, right? Or at least a mind.

But no; while speaking at a meeting of that subcommittee, which is a part of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, last week, he said that LGBT rights are not human rights:

"I am a strong believer in traditional marriage and I do not construe homosexual rights as human rights."

You know, because The Gays, and our LBT brothers and sisters are not human, I guess.

Smith made his remarks at a hearing he chaired on Nigeria on the very day that Nigerian law enforcement arrested twelve men who were accused of holding a same-sex wedding. Smith also suggested that the Obama administration’s "views on LGBT rights affected or hindered our support for Nigeria to defeat Boko Haram." 

It’s amazing that anyone, much less someone who should be representing all of the people of his state, would decide that LGBT rights are not human rights. He feeds into the frenzy that continues still that The Gays are less than, that we don’t count, that we don’t matter.

Of course, it comes as no surprise to learn that Reprehensive Smith received $10,000 in campaign donations from the anti-LGBT hate group, the Family Research Council during the 2014 election cycle. I guess when hate pays to get you elected, then hate is what you will create.
