I believe that you don’t have to ‘like’ everybody and that not everybody is gonna ‘like’ you. There are some people that I know that I just don’t care for, for whatever reason.  Now, that doesn’t mean I’m rude; I’m very polite … Hello, how are you? … but I’m not asking how their weekend was nor am I talking to them about mine. I guess it’s keeping those that I don’t care for out of my personal space and my business.

Cue the New Co-Worker who never meant a moment of silence she didn’t want to fill with chatter. I can’t with her. But, I maintain my politeness until …

One day she says to me, “Smile!” in that pesky cartoon chipmunk kind of way, and I replied that I don’t just blindly walk around with a smile on my face lest the workers at the local Nuthouse — is that the PC term? — spot me smiling at nothing and throw a net over my head.

So then she says, “It takes more muscles to frown than it does to smile.”

I reply, “That’s an old wives tale told by old wives.”

I know … Ow. I guess my politeness was wearing thin.

She then says, “I will make it my job while I’m here to make you smile.”

I reply, “When are you giving your notice?”

And I smiled.

Kellyanne Conway, [t]Rump’s campaign manager is saying [t]Rump will deliver on his campaign promise to get Mexico to pay for that border wall and that his position has “never changed.”

Oddly, though, the President of Mexico has said that his country will never pay for a wall, and that he told [t]Rump that just last week. So I thought I’d lay it down like this, if it makes it clearer who is right and who is the blowhard:

You own a house next to some people who own a dog that keeps running into your yard and eating your dog food, and digging up your roses and pooping on your patio.

What are you gonna do? Well, you’re gonna build a fence to keep that dog out of your yard and you say the neighbors will pay for it.

Yeah, right; let me know how that works out for you.

So Colin Kaepernick sat out the National Anthem recently and the world went nuts. But then he opted to kneel, rather than stand or sit, out of respect; he kept the protest but he gave an inch to the haters.

Now, however, the local police who are hired  to patrol the stadium during as football game and to protect players are saying they might not protect him because he used his right of Free Speech to sit out the anthem.

Um, let me get this queer: one does not have to stand for the anthem as the U.S. is … not yet … a Police State, so Colin Kaepernick is breaking no law with his non-violent protest.

But the police who are paid to do a job are saying they won’t do their job because they don’t like Kaepernick’s protest.

Huh; it sounds like those police officers are just the kind of police officers Kaepernick is talking about.

So, to those officers, you are getting paid to protect the players, all of the players and if you choose not to protect one because you don’t like his politics or his opinion, then turn in your paycheck and stay home.

It really is that easy.

Hot Guys …. Carlos and I recently saw Grandma starring the fabulous Lily Tomlin as a lesbian grandma helping her granddaughter get an abortion. But there, very near the beginning of the film, Lily’s character’s car won’t start so a neighbor, played by Robert C. Miranda, top left, helped jump start it.

As I am apt to do, when spying a hot man with one line of dialogue, I said, to the screen, “He can jump me any time!”

Cue the Carlos side-eye.

Also, on the Starz show Power it’s all about the sizzling Omari Hardwick, but recently I have noticed that Andy Bean, right, an FBI agent, has been wearing some very nice, form-sitting suits and looking a little smoldering himself. And finally, in the most recent episode, we got some Andy Bean Butt Shots … and it was fabulous.

Most folks are steering clear of Florida and The Zika and waiting for Congress to do something which, as usual, they are not because, well, vacation time but …

Last week, Florida Republican, yes, Republican, Congressman David Jolly decided to make a point by bringing a container of them to the House floor to condemn his fellow “lawmakers” for failing to pass legislation to combat the mosquito-borne virus.

That bill is stalled in the Senate, where Democrats … yes, Democrats … are blocking it in a dispute over restrictions on Planned Parenthood.

So Jolly railed at Congress while holding a closed container of the type of mosquitoes that carry the Zika virus.

He did say the mosquitoes in the container were free of the virus, but taunted his fellow lawmakers about what they would do if they were released. 

“Can you imagine, colleagues, the fear and anxiety in this chamber if these hundred mosquitoes were outside this jar not inside this jar?”

I kinda wish he’d let ‘em loose … just to watch the legislators scramble and because maybe, just maybe, if the lives of our Congressman were at risk they’d take a greater interest in the lives of the people they represent.

Kudos to Jolly.

Phyllis Schlafly, the homophobic, anti-feminist activist occasionally referred to as the mother of the so-called … because I think God would beg to differ … Christian conservative movement, dies this week at the age of 92.

Now while I am not a firm believer in "heaven," I would like to think that as Ms. Schlafly — and you just know she'd be pissed at the 'Ms.' — reached the Pearly Gates, God, a feminist,  would greet her and say:

"Oh Phyllis. You never learned that I am Love and Acceptance and Equality. We have no room for you here, but there is space ... downstairs. And not to worry, Hitler stopped snoring after he got that special pillow."

North Carolina Governor Hate, er, Pat McCrory doubled down on his state’s transgender bathroom law in a new ad for his re-election bid, saying the law — which requires transgender students to use the restroom of their sex assigned at birth — protects everyone’s “privacy and safety.” Well, not the privacy and safety of trans Americans but then what do they matter, right?

Apparently they matter quite a bit to the people of North Carolina because right now McCrory trails his Democratic opponent, North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper who stood against the Hate Bill, by an average of 3.6%.

In addition, 55% of North Carolinians disapprove of the law and over 70% of voters feel the law has been bad for North Carolina’s national reputation.

Buh-bye Pat. Take your hate and go home … for good.

Father Anthony Giuliano, a Catholic priest who believes homosexuals must live a “celibate life” to be good Catholics has been accused of molesting a 15-year-old boy about 30 years ago; but, without a change to the statute of limitations on child sex abuse in New York, the Pedophile Priest’s crimes will go unpunished.

See, this past summer, New York state legislators failed to vote on the Child Victims Act, which would have made it easier for child sex abuse victims to seek justice against their abusers, like the Catholic Church, by creating a one-year window for victims to bring charges against their tormenters.

Why there’s a statute of limitations on child rape is beyond me, but what isn’t beyond me is that the Catholic League has called the legislation “a vindictive bill pushed by lawyers and activists out to rape the Catholic Church.”

Yes, because holding child rapists accountable for their actions is mean. Excuse my French, as my Mother used to say, but “Fuck off Catholic Church.”

I Didn't Say It ....

Rick Perry, accused criminal and former Texas governor, on why  people should vote conservative in the next presidential election:

"Something I want you all to think about is that the next president of the United States, whoever that individual may be, could choose up to three, maybe even four members of the Supreme Court. Now this isn't about who's going to be the president of the United States for just the next four years. This could be about individuals who have an impact on you, your children, and even our grandchildren. That's the weight of what this election is really about."

Well, let’s see … we know Miss Ricky won’t be president, and we know that more Americans would choose an openly gay president over an openly evangelical one, and we know that there are fewer people of faith in this country now than in previous years so, um, yeah.

Vote, and set up SCOTUS to be fair and open-minded for the coming generations.

Andy Stanley, an Atlanta pastor, and the son of a Baptist preacher who once hired armed guards on horseback to protect his church from Atlanta gay pride, voicing his support for LGBT youth:

“There is not consensus in this room when it comes to same-sex attraction. There is not consensus in this room when it comes to gay marriage. We just can’t continue to look into the filter of our politics at our spirituality. It’s got to be the other way around — and specifically when it comes to this issue. If all the Christians for just one year, would quit looking at porn, would quit smoking weed, would quit having premarital sex, would quit committing adultery, would pay their taxes, and every church just foster one kid — in one year our nation would feel different. There are so many Christians, so basically — if we would just be better Christians, everything we would like to see changed for the most part would change.”

It’s that whole ‘Judge not lest ye be judged,’ thing mixed in  with some ‘Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.’

Ben Carson, future failed presidential candidate, on his opposition to marriage equality:

“Recognize that if you change the definition of marriage for one group, what do you say to the next group? Do you say, ‘Well, we changed it for this group, but that’s it, we’re not changing it for anybody else.’ Does that seem fair?” 

Carson wouldn’t elaborate on those ‘other groups’ but he has in the past said bigamy was a possibility, and has also compared The Gays to pedophiles and people who have sex with animals.

Barronelle Stutzman, that Washington florist who refused to sell flowers for a same-sex couple’s wedding because God, in an op-ed published by the Washington Post:

"Our government is supposed to protect our First Amendment rights — freedom of religion and expression. But the government is telling me I can only be a faithful Christian within the four walls of my church. That’s impossible and it’s unjust. What would Rob and Curt say if the government told them they could only be who they are in their own homes? But whatever the state says and however they want to try to punish me, they can’t change my faith. What happens in my business or my life is in God’s hands. Having a clear conscience means much more to me than any amount of money or my business. Rob and Curt have their beliefs about marriage and aren’t being stopped by the state from living them out. I only ask for the same freedom."

Barronelle. Honey., stop trying to squeeze out all Fifteen Minutes. No one was asking you to participate or condone same-sex marriage, they were asking for flowers.

That’s all it was, but you took it as a personal attack because, well, I’m guessing you’re nuts.

And you need to sit down because the more you talk the more you alienate people and then your business goes under and you’ll have no one to blame but yourself, though I imagine you’ll run to Fox News and blame The Gays.

Phyllis Schlafly, anti-gay wingnut and Eagle Forum founder, on how marriage equality advocates are trying “to wipe out” Christianity:

“Have you noticed that only Christian small-businesspeople have been harassed and sued for refusing to participate in same-sex marriages even though our fast-growing immigrant populations, you know of Muslims, Hindus and other faiths are also opposed to that concept? They want to wipe out the Christian religion. And most of these other religions do not recognize same-sex marriage. I assume there are some Muslim bakers and photographers and other people who have been harassed, but they’re not being attacked and they’re not being criticized.”

Hmmm, Phyllis … I haven’t heard about the Muslim baker who refused the cake order, or the Hindu florist who said No, perhaps because most people run their businesses for the public, not just the public with whom they agree.

ISBL Asshat of the Week: Phyllis Schlafly

It’s rare that we have a female Asshat of the Week here at ISBL — though we’ve made exceptions for the delightfully delusional Michele Bachmann — because it’s generally the male gender who acts in the most asshatted manner. But today we induct a new female into those hallowed halls: one Phyllis Schlafly, who is visiting our world from the 1920s.

While we have all heard the GOP whispers about rebranding their party, to make them more LGBT-friendly, more Latino-friendly, more female-friendly, we haven’t really seen much action on that, at least at the national level. In fact, just this week, the Republicans — even female Republicans — voted down the Paycheck Fairness Act — meaning women might earn the same as men and not the 23% less than men they earn now.

Sidenote: a junior Asshat of the Week is the Republican Congresswoman  from Tennessee, Marsha Blackburn [right], who actually suggested that Republicans have long “led the fight for women’s equality.”

Now, to be fair, a hard thing to do with Republicans, they say they have a good reason for voting against equal pay .... Obamacare. Yes, it’s the Blame Obamacare excuse from the GOP once again, because they are suggesting that Democrats were using the issue to distract from the alleged problems with Obamacare.

But I digress …

Let’s talk asshat; let’s talk Phyllis Schlafly, a prominent, vocal, and oh-so-out-of-touch member of the Republican movement who suggests that the current pay gap between genders is not wide enough. In an op-ed piece for the Christian Post, Schlafly — the founder of the Eagle Forum PAC — says that woman should never be paid the same as men, and wants the pay gap widened so that woman will be able to find themselves a suitable husband. She says:

“ … women typically choose a mate (husband or boyfriend) who earns more than she does. Men don’t have the same preference for a higher-earning mate.

While women prefer to HAVE a higher-earning partner, men generally prefer to BE the higher-earning partner in a relationship. This simple but profound difference between the sexes has powerful consequences for the so-called pay gap.

Suppose the pay gap between men and women were magically eliminated. If that happened, simple arithmetic suggests that half of women would be unable to find what they regard as a suitable mate.”

See, in Phyllis Schlafly’s world — not in present-day America, I’m guessing — all women really want is a man to take care of them and if you start treating women equally, meaning equal pay, they will simply lose interest in finding a mate.

It’s no great surprise that Schlafly thinks this way; she has long been the voice of the most conservative parts of the GOP and has used her  Eagle Forum PAC to give money to the likes of fellow ISBL Asshat of the Week winners like Eric Cantor, Michele Bachmann, Steve King, and Ted Cruz.

But her stance, especially given that the GOP is trying to make itself more appealing after losing the White House [again] in 2012, will only undermine the efforts of the party to rebrand itself. This, though, is actually a good thing, so maybe Schlafly should get a different award from ISBL?

No, asshat will do nicely.

I Didn't Say It ....

Sean Hayes, on his new sitcom, Sean Saves The World, not being “message driven” like The New Normal:

“Absolutely not. If that’s a byproduct of their viewing experience, fantastic. But it’s definitely not in the forefront of our minds when creating this show week-to-week. It’s making people laugh and telling great stories. I think with me playing a gay dad, the gay part should be the fifth most interesting thing about the character. It definitely doesn’t need to be focused on that just like in real life. So if it’s groundbreaking for being extra funny, great. But there is no agenda here other than to be funny.”

But, as in shows like The New Normal, you can send a message and make it funny. From what I’m hearing Sean Saves The World doesn’t even manage to do that.

I mean, why have a gay character if you’re not going to address the fact that he’s gay?

David Stern, NBA Commissioner, denouncing the new President of the IOC and the organization for not stepping up against human rights abuses.

“I’m gonna behave myself, for the record here, which is unlike me, but you know, the first phone call to the new head of the Olympics [was] from President [Vladimir] Putin, and everyone wants to talk about the Russian law on homosexuality. Think about the opportunities that sports have to make a continuing statement, and the only thing that we’re saying in that context is ‘Shhhh! No one say anything!’”

Sports are one of those things that are universal around the world, and sports can make a great impact on what’s happening in Russia if the athletes, the leagues, the managers, speak up.

Phyllis Schlafly, calling for the government to end all funding for, well, everybody and everything:

"We must shame and cut off taxpayers' money from the groups that killed the American family, including feminists, judges, legislators, public school teachers and administrators, so-called child protection agencies, professors, psychologists, college courses, government handouts and Democratic politicians who want big-government spending in order to win votes. The problem cannot be remedied by prohibiting same-sex marriage (even by a constitutional amendment) or by telling men to 'man up.'“

All I can think of to say is: “What a delusional, ridiculously stupid, Pat Robertson-in-a-dress-and-a-fright-wig, out-of-date, relic from the 50s.”

Oh, and I’d add, “Shut the f**k up.”

Gilles Marini, on if he would ever lie to help a famous gay friend stay closeted:

"We're in 2013. I think it's very uncool to be in the closet nowadays. I never was a witness in any wedding in my life, and the first time I was a witness in a wedding in my life was for my dear friends Philippe and David — same-sex couple — and I think it was fantastic. Don't stay in the closet. You'll only hurt your heart and, down the line, probably your family. They need to know the truth about what you like and what you want in life."

Word. From a hot guy.

Cher, on turning down an invitation to perform at the Sochi Games:

“I can’t name names but my friend called who is a big oligarch over there, and asked me if I’d like to be an ambassador for the Olympics and open the show. I immediately said no. I want to know why all of this gay hate just exploded over there. He said the Russian people don’t feel the way the government does.”

Seriously? In 2013 there’s a person in the world that thinks Cher … CHER … would perform for an anti-gay country like Russia.

Now, if they’d asked JLo and the check was big enough ….

Rachel Maddow, on the sudden crush that conservatives and anti-gay "pro-family" groups have on Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"It’s one thing for the right to fall in love with its own politicians, to make Reagan a saint, Sarah Palin their own collective girlfriend, but the president of Russia, he is not that into you. Seriously, I know you guys hate President Obama, so it feels good to have a man-crush on somebody else, but this guy is the president of Russia. Zip it up, you guys, seriously. Have some respect."

It’s that conservative rightwingnut racism at work again. Putin and Obama have issues so the GOP falls all over themselves to align themselves with the leader of a country which seeks to punish people for being gay.

Remember that the next time you vote.

Bill Maher, on the GOP and their battle against all things Obama, including First Lady Michelle Obama’s programs to have kids eat healthy and drink more water:

"I saw in the news that Michelle Obama has a new program. You know she tried to get kids to eat better and Republicans were against that. And now she wants people to hydrate more, I’m not kidding, she says ‘Drink more water.’ I think this is a test to see if the Republicans will come out against water. That’s not water, that’s socialism juice!"

Apparently, the blowhards are already speaking out. Rush Limbaugh, who never met a chain of McDonalds that he didn’t want to eat and then wash down with illegally prescribed medications, while calling the First Lady “Moochelle” says, "We have real trouble, real problems in this country and around the world. What is this push to drink more water?  Now, we know that Bloomberg doesn't want people drink sweetened soft drinks, limiting the size to 16 ounces.  I'll tell you what I think it is.  I think there's an all-out assault on soda pop, soft drinks."

Funny how the fattest man on Earth, with a head filled with cheese and a gut stuffed with lard, can call the First Lady of the country a derogatory term.

Imagine if a liberal journalist had done the same to Laura Bush.

Isaiah Washington, former Grey's Anatomy co-star, on returning to acting and his claim that "an agenda" ruined his career following those anti-gay remarks — he called co-star TR Knight, a ‘fag’ — he made in 2007:

"I didn't have a choice. After the incident at the Golden Globes everything just fell apart. It literally stopped. Whatever the agenda, whatever the plan was it worked. I lost everything. I couldn't afford to have an agent. I couldn't afford to have a publicist for the crisis management to continue. I couldn't afford to continue. I went from 2 million dollars a year to residual checks. Zero. I couldn't get another apartment after I turned in my lease for my $3 million home. I had to put it in my wife's name. No one wanted to touch the name of Isaiah Washington for three years."

And it’s all someone else’s fault, eh, Isaiah? Then why did you apologize if you never said it? And why wait three years to expose this “agenda”?

The fact is, you made a mistake and called someone by a derogatory name, and people, in the industry stopped wanting to work with you. I’d hoped you would have learned from your mistake but you’ve gone back to the lie that it never happened.

I Didn't Say It ....

Martin Cizmar, the arts and culture editor of Portland Oregon's Willamette Week, on returning his Eagle Scout badge to the Boy Scouts in protest of the group's anti-gay policies:

"I am not gay. However, I cannot in good conscious hold this badge as long as the BSA continues a policy of bigotry. Though I didn't know at the time, I was acquainted with a number of gay scouts and scouters. They were all great men, loyal to the scout oath and motto and helpful to the movement. There is no fair reason they should not be allowed to participate in scouting."

Nice when more and more straight people step up as allies against LGBT discrimination.

Bravo, Mr. Cizmar, Bravo!

Frank Bruni, NYT columnist, on Michelle Bachmann’s hate:

“Does it encourage gratuitously divisive condemnations of Barack Obama as ‘anti-American,’ one of many incendiary phrases in her attacks against him in 2008? And does it compel a war against homosexuality waged with the language and illogic she uses? She has said that gay men and lesbians are dysfunctional products of abuse and agents of ‘sexual anarchy,’ and when the singer and songwriter Melissa Etheridge was battling breast cancer years ago, Bachmann helpfully chimed in: ‘This may be an opportunity for her now to be open to some spiritual things, now that she is suffering with that physical disease. She is a lesbian.’ Bachmann’s concept of Christian love brims with hate, and she has a deep satchel of stones to throw. From what kind of messiah did she learn that?”

Bachmann is the queen of masking her hate of LGBT people in a cloak of Christianity, as she is a master of hiding her loathing of a Black president in the guise of politics.

Dan Cathy, president of Chick-fil-Antigay, spouting his homophobia as the word of god [little g]:

"I think we are inviting God's judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at Him and say 'we know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage' and I pray God's mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude to think that we have the audacity to define what marriage is about."

Um, how does his bigotry fit into Christianity? How does it work in Christian love? And which part of the Bible asked him to hate?

Tony Perkins, AFA bigot-in-chief, on Chick-fil-Antigay, to his minions:

"Last week, Chick-fil-A's CEO Dan Cathy told the Baptist Press of his company's steadfast support for marriage and family. This simple affirmation of biblical truth has sent homosexual activists into a frenzy. Chick-fil-A may be a private company, but that doesn't mean its executives have to surrender their beliefs. Under the First Amendment, they are just as entitled as any American to speak publicly about their views. Those of us who share Chick-fil-A's commitment to the biblical definition of the family need to show them that we stand with them (whether or not we're chicken connoisseurs!). I love how the LGBT community is portrayed as hateful because we call into question a fast food chain that takes its customers money and funnels it into hate group—um, like the AFA.

Chick-fil-Antigay can do whatever they want to do with their money, just like I can do whatever I want to with mine.

And it won’t be buying sammiches at a hate food store.

Tony Perkins, AFA bigot-in-0chief—aftar saying Chick-fil-Antigay ha the right to fund whatever hate they choose, on Google being LGBT-friendly:

"Thanks to a new campaign, Google's approach to traditional values is to search—and destroy. The web giant just kicked off a worldwide push called 'Legalize Love,' aimed at breaking down the barriers to homosexuality around the globe. Their biggest targets? Countries that have moral objections to same-sex relationships…. After watching Target and J.C. Penney take a financial hit after endorsing same-sex marriage, Google should know better. They can push to 'Legalize Love,' but they shouldn't be surprised by the blow back. Because when it comes to Google, political neutrality is what most users are searching for."

Not only does Miss Tony not see his homophobia, his bigotry, his hate, for the LGBT community, he cannot even see what a hypocrite he is; if funding hate is A-OK for Chick-fil-Antigay, then funding love is A-OK for Google.

Randy Thomasson, head of Save California, whining that California's Gay Education Bill won’t be repealed”

"Parents and grandparents who don't want their children and grandchildren sexually indoctrinated with unnatural and unhealthy 'lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender' role models must decide now to exit the immoral, imploding, dysfunctional government school system and place their children in church schools or home schools. This is no time to be indecisive, since you only have one chance with your child's education. Because of SB 48 and seven other homosexual-bisexual-transsexual indoctrination laws, California K-12 government schools have become radical sexual indoctrination agencies."

Funny, all those years I spent in school, having no access to gay education, just the straight kind, and I went all gay. By Thomasson’s own “logic” I should have been indoctrinated into heterosexuality. Oh, but I guess The Straights don’t have the ability to turn people straight; that’s a power for The Gays.

Phyllis Schlafly, on Obama’s non-religion:

“Every time he quotes from the Declaration of Independence, he omits the word ‘Creator.’ That's very strange; we all know what the Declaration says and he just omits that….You were talking a minute ago about Arlington Cemetery; if you haven't been there, I'm sure you've seen pictures of all the crosses there and I just wonder if the day is going to come when they want to take down all those crosses."

Yes, Obama will run across the Potomac and start digging up crosses in a cemetery because he’s not the right kind of Christian.

And by that I mean a white Christian.

Debbie Wasserman-Shultz, Democratic National Committee head, on her belief that marriage equality will be on the national party platform:

“I expect marriage equality to be a plank in the national party platform. President Obama has declared his support for it ... Now, our platform committee process is a people-powered process. We have a platform committee and the platform is developed by our Democratic activists and the platform committee members, so they’ll go through a process. I hope that marriage equality, and expect that marriage equality, will be part of our platform. "

Put it out there.

It’s equality, and it’s for everyone.

It’s about effing time.

Matt Barber, hate group honcho, on Hilary Clinton’s remarks about AIDS:

"Shame on Hillary Clinton. In choosing to ignore the reality that in the United States people are primarily infected with AIDS through deviant homosexual behavior, she has essentially postured with a false air of resolve while cowardly refusing to address the real cause of AIDS in the U.S. and that’s homosexual behavior. We all know better and so should Hillary Clinton. She missed a real opportunity here to show courage and discourage people from engaging in the high-risk behavior of homosexuality that spreads AIDS."

Yup. The kid who contracted HIV through tainted blood was a deviant. The mother who contracted the virus while giving birth to a child is a pervert. People having sex are not deviants.

We should all avoid high risk behaviors that might lead to contracting the virus. Wear a condom; don’t have unprotected sex; get yourself checked; don’t share needles.
