Architecture Wednesday: Curvy Colorful Home

Extraordinarily rare opportunity to own a modern masterpiece, designed and built by the architect Don Chapell as his personal residence and regarded as one of Florida's most architecturally significant homes. Chapell created a secure compound with wraparound wings that surround a landscaped courtyard; the primary living space opens to the courtyard and also to the private lap pool, perfect for morning coffee or gathering with friends, that sits along the serene Pansy Bayou.

Spanning more than 6,800 interior square feet, the design of the home is inside and out is both whimsical and refined, showcasing the eclectic palette and materials of postmodernism, with an interplay of light and shadow that transforms each space, hour by hour.

The scale and layout offer luxury accommodation, with six bedrooms including two owners' suites, six full and two half bathrooms, abundant storage and even a safe room. The central living space offers breathtaking views of the native landscape and the open bayou with soaring 17-foot ceilings and two walls of floor-to-ceiling windows that maximize sightlines and the home's shimmering natural light.

Spanning the central living space, a catwalk bridges the second stories of the adjacent living wings. The primary owners' suite encompasses a bedroom with private balcony with long-range water views, a large wardrobe, sprawling spa bath with separate water closet, extra-long vanity, and a separate shower room with soaker tub; floor-to-ceiling windows in the shower open to a private bayou-facing balcony.

Adjacent is a light-filled, oversized en suite office with gently curving walls, volume ceiling, sitting area and a private, secure entrance that can be accessed from the courtyard. A separate wing features a cozy nursery connected to a second owners' suite, an additional bedroom, fanciful full bath and inspiring lounge and game room. Just beyond that is an oversized guest or staff quarters with sitting area and a small kitchenette, a full bath, and its own direct access from the entry courtyard.

Postmodern hallmarks include original poured terrazzo floors with imported Murano glass accents, multihued surfaces—I generally loathed mixed colors on kitchen cabinetry, especially this mixed, but it works in this house; Chapell offers every artistic feature as a showcase of the museum quality of the home.

Functional amenities include garage space for three vehicles, a dedicated laundry room and separate storage room with outdoor access. It was recently sold for over the $10M asking price to someone who likes curves and colors and stripes and big houses and Florida.

  1. My favorite room? The multicolored tiled bathroom! I'd live in there! Otherwise, the house is so not me, but it reminds me of a gay owned B&B in Rehoboth beach. I could most definitely weekend there, or a weeks stay, but I don't know I'd want to live there. The exterior design is awesome. And with all those windows...and my reputation for walking around scantily clad or in my birthday suit...passer bys would get a view!!!!

That's it! And I like that bathroom, too, but as for the rest of it, it's too pastel for me.

  2. So, what happened? Were the Jetsons evicted? Not my style.

  3. It looks lovely and livable too. I wonder if Don Chapell also designed low-cost, affordable homes for ordinary people to inhabit?

    1. I doubt that; no money there!

😘 You had me at "curvy." Actually I agree with Maddie and Dave, it ain't me. And, the idea of moving from my 15% humidity desert oasis to 90% dripping wet air scares me a lot. BUT! Bob, if you and Carlos and Consuelo and Maddie and Dave and all of us pool our money, we can all share this gay (and straight and trans and asexual and cat and dog and all) B&B&Bawdy place for escapes for a day or a week at a time!! Come on, space and "shimmering natural light," and a lap pool, and Maddie's birthday suit! What's not to love? A time share without all the bullshit restrictions! Braveheart in Florida pastels, "they'll never take our freedom!" ✊️💪🤘
Too much? Ah, well, if ya know it's only a dream; dream big! 🤔🤪🤩

  5. Wow! Impressive. The architectural layout is great, but the interior design...not so much. I see what you mean by the multi-color cabinetry. Meh. But that pool? Oh, yes, please. Maddie and I might get arrested for walking around that place nekkid all the time.

    1. It feels utilitarian to me, but if I could live pool side I might be happy!

    2. Yeah, come on...let's all romp around and skinny dip.

  6. The kitchen cabinets remind me of a day care set up. But I love the time work in the bathrooms, especially the second one.if live in the studio space as long as I had access to the outdoor spaces.

    1. It fits in a Flori-duh home, but not in my home. I do like that tiled bathroom, though.

  7. Very interesting. Beautiful views from the windows, and lovely bathrooms/wet rooms, but generally not for me. (Just as well, really.)

    1. I get a convention center vibe to it, and a convention center in Flori-duh is a hard pass!

  9. I love the light and airiness of the home---A touch of Miami Vice---Never cared or that color palette---It's a little too big for me---You know, since it's the architect's home, there was no expense spared when it came to quality---The tile in the bathrooms are right up my alley---They have pop and not predictable---The one with the tub is a little odd to me with all that space and no separations---The views are splendid and great for outdoor living----Now it's Florida and that would turn me off----This girl does not do humid----I don't want to be stuck inside during the summer months----I lived in Las Vegas for a year and the heat was no big deal though I would like for it to be about 10 degrees or so color in the summer months BUT what got me the most is the businesses were like walk in freezers when you visited them----Way too cold----Nice home----

    1. I can admire the home, and even like parts, but most of it is a 'No' for me.

  10. It’s cool and fun but definitely not home. More hotel-like. How secure is the compound? As soon as I see Florida, I think, “Nope.”

    1. It doesn't feel like a home, does it? And, yes, that Flori-duh business is off-putting.

  11. Just looking at the pic I said: Miami.
And I was not wrong. This is quintessential Miami Beach (and Miami Vice, natch). Love the views. The layout is fab.
    Pity it's in Florida....

    XOXO

But the Flori-duh part is annoying.

  12. I like the wavy aspect to it, and bedroom windows to the floor is very appealing. Like you, I don't like multi coloured kitchen cupboards, but unlike you, I don't like them here either. They would all look much nicer in the softer glassy looking blue.

  13. I like the pool, sweetpea. The rest of the house is too Florida for me. xoxo (By the by, if you get a chance check out AD's visit to the set of "Mid-Century Modern" it was a real delight visually and hearing Nathan Lane is always an absolute joy! xoxo)

  15. My initial thought was "not for me" also, and "that looks like it belongs in Miami" and whaddayaknow. Looking at it though I find it quite lovely, lots of natural light and great colour schemes!

    1. It seems too much like a convention hall or a hotel or something. I like the xterior and the pool, but the colors inside bother me a bit.

  16. There are some color choices that I would want to edit. I guess if you are paying $10-m+ you don't think about - how much will the electric bill be?
