Architecture Wednesday: 1914 Neo-Gothic Church

This magnificent four-floor condo-townhome was carved out of a 1914 Neo-Gothic Church in Toronto.

Meticulously restored, the designers preserved the historical details such as original wooden beams and stonework while incorporating modern glitzy updates; even the old bell tower was retained. The townhome is tucked away in a discreet courtyard and offers soaring cathedral ceilings, original intricate wooden details, exposed original brick masonry, wooden trusses, stone columns and gothic brick arches.

The first floor is where you’ll find the dining area, the living room and a modern kitchen. On the second floor an illuminated catwalk leads from the gym and office to a guest bedroom, while the third floor features the spacious primary bedroom with a luxurious fifth floor ensuite bath and custom built-in storage spaces. The basement level has a mudroom and storage area with direct access to the private, underground parking space set up for electric charging.

  1. When do I move in???? About the only thing I didn't like was the chrome and glass railing on the upper floors. That felt too commercial to me but could be remedied easily. I LOVE the brick work everywhere. STUNNING repurpose.

If I moved in would this make it the first church to go from a house of worship to a house of whorship?

    1. I love the church part, the beams and the rooflines, but some of the more modern touches, like that walkway and railing, throw me.
And I'd prefer the House of Whorship!

  2. This is rather cool. I could live there --- with an elevator! Despite the fact I'd be constantly worried about banging my head on those beams in that bathroom. LOL. I do want that neon art in the bedroom, though.

Absolutely gorgeous! Not my style at all but I love it. The brickwork, the arches, the artwork, lighting…amazing.

  5. Nope, not for me AND it is in Toronto. :p
I can see how it would attract buyers though and there are some great features. But I'd feel out of place in it...just too glitzy.
