Architecture Wednesday: Fishing Cabin

 I’ll just say this outright … if this is what a fishing cabin looks like, then why do I hate fishing?

This fishing cabin, located in the mountains near Jackson, is a wow. But Carney Logan Burke Architects decided that, rather than create a stereotypical fishing hut that feels temporary and makeshift, they would build a gorgeous home that sits on 10 acres and feels both contemporary and classic at the same time.

Besides being a beautifully nature inspired log cabin structure, this fishing cabin is surrounded by natural features and wild lands that fishing enthusiasts and outdoor lovers will thrive in … if that’s what you’re into. In addition to fishing, though, there are the mountains and the creeks and a nearby wildlife habitat supported by the creek’s waters.

Before the fishing cabin, there was a home on the site, but rather than tear that down and start over, the architects chose to take advantage of the existing structure and strip it down to its barest bones. This also enabled them from being forced to move the home back from the water’s edge.

In order to create that new, upscale but still homey escape, designers replaced the shellacked logs, shiny river rock interior decor, and the scattered separate buildings across the plot. They reorganized the floorplan to create a streamlined grouping of buildings connected by a long, classically Western porch that sits low but still lets guests enjoy the surroundings.

Of course, in a space that’s designed to let guests enjoy as much of the outdoors as possible the designers blended the interior and exterior spaces through the use of large window openings cut into the log walls, and yet, while the home maintains a country western aesthetic, it also has a contemporary style, achieved by staining the logs black, using black steel in the details, and black painted wood in furnishings. In contrast, the interior also features a predominantly white color scheme—such as the whitewashed logs bolstering the ceiling—to balance out what’s seen on the outside of the house.

It’s chic and new, and old and traditional, and who really needs to fish when you go there.
