Architecture Wednesday: Denver Four Square

Step into the timeless elegance of this meticulously reimagined 1912 Denver Square, a captivating blend of classic charm and modern sophistication. Purchased on its 100th birthday in 2012 it was lovingly transformed to echo the spirit of a boutique hotel in Paris, with clean lines and refined details throughout.

As you enter, a sense of grandeur envelops you, with marble tile flooring guiding you through the entryway and into the living with its original brick walls exposed, elegant panel molding and a dramatic black fireplace.

An open-concept kitchen—a chef's dream—beckons with its expansive layout and luxurious marble countertops, while the adjacent dining room with built-in China hutch opens to a cozy family room retreat with French doors leading to the outside; and just off the kitchen is a boldly colored pantry and laundry area that also opens to the back garden.

Upstairs a solarium, a peaceful sanctuary bathed in natural light, serves as an extension of the master bedroom, complete with a walk-out terrace, en-suite bath and walk-in closets. On the same floor are another bedroom, home office and bathroom, while the basement level features two more bedrooms and a bath, as well as additional laundry space.

This home is a touch of the old with a dash of the new, with both history and a hint at the future in its walls.

  1. The exposed brick is nice, still too much white, though I like the bold colors, they just needed to use more of them. I'd get rid of the floofy light fixtures and the black paint at the back of the house.

Great house and nice interior, the bathrooms and their lighting fixtures are perfect. The paintings and books lying against the wall, and most of the lighting fixtures have to go. And how can I sun bathe nude without giving the neighbor with all the tall windows a free show ?! Made worse if they’re uptight about nudity.

🤗 Exposed brick--yes! A kitchen large enough for a large table where people gather for cooking, homework, crafts, hanging out, great conversation--excellent! Love the bathrooms EXCEPT that little guest one that just overpowers a tiny space--I don't get it! Peaceful solarium--ahhh! Laundry room/pantry--really? What I see is the saloon where I do my wash--GENIUS!! I'd move in today!! 🥳

    1. I am seriously thinking of a wine fridge in our laundry room; we have the space, though the room is also Kitty Litter Central!

  6. Living in Denver, more specifically Congress Park, Denver Squares are the lay of the land. You easily spot a Denver Square just by looking at the front. A well-known fact is that after WWII, Denver relaxed the rules of building homes to accommodate the housing shortage. That is why you have a lot of lots, a little on the smaller side.

I had a friend who lived in one, and I loved it. It looked exactly like the one above, and the floor plan was the same, but things were flipped. Her stairs were on the right as you entered the foyer. She was a psychologist who worked from home so she would see clients in her living room and close the pocket doors to the living room. It appears that this Denver Square was added to the back of the home to add a family room, bathroom, and laundry. My friend's home would end in the kitchen. She did have a small powder room on the first floor under the stairs and the laundry was in the basement. The basement was a walkout. Meaning you could enter the basement from the first floor or a door from the outside of the home. She used the basement for storage. A lesbian with pack rat issues. What I liked about the home is that the fireplaces went through all the levels of the home at the same location. She could have rented out the basement as an apartment if she wanted to. I did have another friend who had a Denver Square and he and his husband rented out their basement which was converted to an apartment. Very easy to do. I loved how the stairs were configured and the large foyer.

They did a good job with the renovations. Did you catch the bar and the washer and dryer in the same room? Different. I would tweak the kitchen. I am not a fan of all that black. But it is nicely done. That powder room is wild but whimsical. I always worried about the bath shower combination with the wrap-around shower curtain. Seems that water could splash everywhere. Not a deal breaker. All in all a good job. I like it.

  7. I like parts of this....and then parts I can't stand....like that all blue room off the kitchen. The woodwork is nice...and love the floor plan . I think I would like more natural elements . the exterior design is stunning. And I love a nice black and white checked floor.

    1. I am loving the splashes of colors throughout this one, probably because there are some white spaces and some original brick walls.
      I, too, love that floor.

  8. Great interior spaces and the city garden is a nice size and has potential. Great idea to keep the booze in that beautiful laundry room. What else are you going to do while the wash is spinning?

    1. The idea of a bar IN the laundry room is genius ... the machine and I could be in our spin cycles together!

    1. I like the blend of the old with the new, and some of the bold color choices; the backyard needs sprucing up, I think, but I'd work with it.

  10. Very nice!
It's beautiful outside and inside. Love the colors they used! Just the right amount of white (some of these older houses tend to be a little closed up). I kinda love the little jewel box washroom??

  11. The house has loads of street appeal, and although some decoration choices were brave, I think it all works.

  12. I like this one pretty well, especially the blue. That's my color for interior decorating. I'm troubled by the one gold sink with the weird wallpaper above it. Gold screams Mar-a-Lumpo to me.

  14. Somewhat charming. I dislike all the light fixtures. They simply do not belong. And... the one complete disaster... that bathroom? Vomitorium? Not sure what they were going for there.
