House Republicans Vote To Take 255 Days Off In 2016

I was thinking about getting a new job. And since I’ve worked my whole life, and now I feel like cutting back a bit, I’d like something with flexible hours, fewer hours, but, if I could, make a decent salary, too.

So, I have decided to run Congress, where, next year, House Republicans have scheduled themselves to work just 110 days.

Yes, out of the 365 days a year, not counting that Leap Day thingy, House Republicans want 255 days off; and, you know, they are provided with a taxpayer salary of $174,000 a year … nearly $1600 a day … or $197 an hour for an eight-hour work-day.Not to mention the pension for life and the free health care and all those other perks.

I could live on that.

And yet these are the same Republicans who reject raising the minimum wage and reject mandating paid family leave for American workers who work forty hours a week, 52 weeks a year just to make ends meet.

So, why are we letting them do this? Why are we allowing the GOP controlled Congress to give themselves 255 days off each year, including the entire months of August and November?

And why we keep hearing GOP asshats, like Speaker of the House Paul Ryan who refuses to spend one minute away from his family while denying that same right to American workers, call a large majority of Americans lazy, entitled, looking for government handouts, and also kvetch and moan whenever President Obama takes a day off.

Americans, those of us who work, and those of us who have elected these asshats to Congress, get an average of twelve vacation days a year — and we usually take just ten of those. And the median household income is about $50,00, with one out of four households living on less than $25,000 per year.

Why do we do this? Why elect people, pay them more than we make, and allow them to decide when and for how long they are going to work?

As for their attacks on Obama and his golf trips? Let’s take a look at the numbers:

While president, for eight years, George W. Bush took 879 vacation days while President Obama, who hasn’t quite finished his eight years, hasn’t even broken the 200 day mark yet.

Two-hundred days in eight years? In eight years a GOP Congressman, and by default, yes, even a Democratic Congressman, will have taken 2,040 days off.

  6. I never had a job where we workers could VOTE on how many days off we got. Even if we could have, I doubt we would have been THAT GENEROUS to ourselves.

  8. The only bright spot in this news is that is 255 days they can't pass bigoted, racist, misogynistic laws.

I say we pay them per day worked, not for days they don't. And we should dock them a percent of their pay for every vote they miss.
