Architecture Wednesday: Remmarholmen Island Cabin

Have you ever dreamed of your own island, where timelessly stylish buildings would be ready for you and your friends, where you can find a sheltered place in all wind directions and spend your free time peacefully all year round? This weekend or holiday cabin sits on its own tranquil island just a short distance from the mainland and might be the perfect fit.

Remmarholmen island, just 40 minutes from Helsinki City, Finland, is all that and more.

The buildings—main house, guest house and sauna—all have an atmosphere that lends itself to being close to nature, with wonderful little details. The materials used in the interior—granite, glass, oak and rusted Corten steel—create a harmonious and luxurious feel throughout the three different structures.

The main includes an entire length of glass wall facing the sea, with a great room showcasing a sunken conversation pit and fireplace; the dining room and kitchen, with large pantry, finish off the open plan great room while two bedrooms and one-and-one-half bathrooms complete the plan.

The passage from the main building to the sauna and guest house is made easy with wooden paths made of durable Siberian larch and the large terraces around the buildings offer a quiet place regardless of wind direction. The sauna building features a large sauna with views to the water as well as an additional bathroom, while other building contains a kitchen, dining and living area, and bedroom and bath; perfect for guests. There is a separate storage building for hobby equipment and supplies, along with a sturdy jetty where you can helicopter in if you’re so inclined.

And if the design and details that facilitate island living are carefully thought out so are the property's technical solutions: geothermal energy, a desalination system to obtain drinking water from seawater and a wastewater system that meets today's requirements are all thoroughly thought out. There’s an outdoor shower, gas fireplace, motorized sunshades and outdoor lighting that contribute to the enjoyment of comfortable living.

It’s peaceful and sleek place to get away from it all and can be yours for just a hair over $4M.

  1. I'm not too big on many built ins, like those beds, and a bit sparse...and modern for me, but I don't dislike it. The exterior is way cool and chic...and love the deck walkways to the water. Reminds me of Fire Island. But you had me at ISLAND. Island= away from people. A win for me.SOLD.

    1. I like the sparseness of it, but the built-in beds? Not so much. I also like the "away from people" of it all!!

  2. Right now?
If I had the money, I’d buy this on the spot. Have you seen the United States lately?
But it’s very Scandi (duh) and I live that. It’s not fussy and the idea of several buildings is attractive.

    XOXO

    1. I like the guest house and the sauna house and the outdoor space; I also like the minimalism.
And the idea of shooting at people in boats who get too close!

  3. You forgot to mention if you also get a groundskeeper who shovels snow? If this is a package deal, I'll take it.

    1. Well, there is a guesthouse for my Houseboys to share when they aren't tending to my needs.

  4. Exterior is phenomenal. Interior is not my style, but beautifully done. A great place for a vacation. Do you know how cold that water is?!?!?!

    1. I like the interior because I like all the views and the simplicity of it. And you're literally surrounded by your own cold plunge after you sauna etc.!

  5. Wonderful light, but I wonder how bleak it is in the winter? (I know, picky!)

  6. I just saw a story this morning about an island that is being bought by Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump near Albania. They "are set to invest a staggering $1.4 billion into turning an abandoned Soviet weapons base into a luxury island resort."
So this choice made me think of them. :(

  8. Love the location. Finland's average yearly temperature is between 41-45.5 F. That is a little cold. Now if we can pick up the home and move it to another nice, remote local with higher temps. I love the outside, the windows, and light. I would choose another wood tone. Too much of the light wood. The concrete gives me too much of a stark, depressing feeling. Sort of what you would get with the brutalist movement. Good choice if we could move it and bring a little warmth in the place.

    1. I'd want the cold to keep interlopers at bay!

    1. I would probably live half a year there and the rest in a more urban populated spot.

  10. This is beautiful. So simple, but elegant. The only change I'd wish for would be to swivel that conversation pit so no backs would be to the fireplace.
Move it to the Caribbean (out of the hurricane belt) and I'd rob a bank in order to buy it

  11. I guess those are the "Enjoy The View" seats???
And I don't mind the bleakness of it all, though I would have to get out every so often because of island fever!

  12. Very nice but a bit too sleek and modern for my tastes. If it's in the woods I want something more rustic.

And yes I did, years ago, consider finding an island where I could live off the grid. I was very young then, now I need running water, electricity, he:)at and a nearby grocery store. :)

  13. Rather nice but I would feel like I was sitting in a timber lined sauna. Ah, the memories. Precision timing to take photographs with a sunny sky. I wouldn't be good with the isolation.

    1. I might like the isolation for a while but I would need a second home near a city.

  14. An island hide-away? Yes please! It just needs to be much closer to Adelaide, South Australia than Helsinki.

  15. It's very beautiful in an "IKEA" kinda way but then it does fit beautifully with its surroundings doesn't it. Oddly enough, I was talking to a lady from my yoga class last week and she told me she and her husband are off to "their" island (yes they own it) in Sweden for four months. I hadn't realized she was Swedish, her French is that good, but she said there are so many islands in Sweden that it's quite easy to buy your own island and it is their little piece of summer paradise!
