Architecture Wednesday: Villa Les Iris ... But First:

It looks like the really nasty stuff with stay to the south and east of Camden, but we're in for a lot of rain for the next twenty-four ...

Located next to the Parc du Cinquantenaire, near the Rue des Tongres, is the 'Villa Les Iris' built in 1898 by the architect Jules Barbier in Art Nouveau style—though the façade on the street side was modified in 1924 in an Art Deco style—and classified in its entirety since 2018.

The villa is roughly 7,000 square feet, with the through a small garden behind a wrought iron gate. The main floor showcases a mosaic entrance hall and grand staircase along with the living room with a marble fireplace, a study, a dining room and a separate kitchen that opens onto a terrace complete.

On the first floor—what we in America would call the second floor—there are 3 bedrooms, a bathroom and a shower room. The second floor offers 3 additional bedrooms and 2 more bathrooms. There are also two offices that can be converted into bedrooms. The roof has been completely renovated and the front and back facades have just been cleaned. In addition there is a large cellar and a garage for two cars.

There isn't much that I don't love about this one, though an elevator might be nice, and since it's listed for sale at a bit over $2 million, and features original details including curved marble fireplaces, herringbone flooring, high ceilings, large windows, and custom molding, with six bedrooms, it could make a very nice B&B …

  4. Now this is absolutely stunning. The outside is the kind of style I like and while I don't like art deco I love art nouveau. The windows and all the extra architectural elements in this are stunning. But that green trim and that one room would have to go that just looks putrid. But the exterior of this house is absolutely magnificent. And has character.

Now do you have your canoes on standby in case you need them?

    1. I like art deco for it's streamlined nature, but I like art nouveau for it's lack of straight lines; go figure.
We might fashion a canoe out of a fallen tree if need be!

  5. I love stately and this is it! I would definitely paint (oh, that green) and, obviously, furnish). The price seems awfully reasonable, too. Imagine $2 million being reasonable! There was a time in our lives where this might have been a possibility. NOT anymore.

  8. Looks like the storm is calming down. I see that Camden has a tropical storm warning-winds and rain. Be safe. Make sure Carlos does not wonder into the street.

The outside of the home looks plain. Nothing would attract me to the home. It does not draw me in.

Now the inside is a different story. The majority of the floors are to die for. Now who ever did that kitchen should be shot-twice. Love the windows and all the light. I know when I buy the place the place it will be empty. Great!! The way it is staged now does not do the home justice. I will need to fill it a little more and make the place welcoming, cozy, and a place you would not want to leave. The idea of 7,000 square feet is a little much for me. As you mentioned a nice B & B would be an option or rent the place out for an event space. How about cooperate housing. You could provide bedrooms for several companies and everyone shares the main spaces. We do need to talk about an elevator and parking. All those bedrooms and only two parking spaces. I hear the public transportation system is good. Great possibilities.

    1. I don't mind the outside, like Mitchell said, it looks stately. But the inside sells it for me, as well as the garden.

  9. Hope the worst is over now! I can imagine you guys got tons or rain.
And the house is very pretty. Love the architectural details and some of those floors are fab. It's very spacious and that's surprising. I'm with Mads about the green color, but it's very of the style.
    Very pretty. Two mill, huh?

    XOXO

    1. So far it's been steady rain, not a lot at once but all day, but the winds are dying down so I think we're done with Idalia!
See, I love the green because it's not what everyone would choose, and $2M is a steal!

  10. I'll take it. When can I move in? Oh, wait! First, all that green has to be changed to blue. I hope the storm is as easy on you as it was on us. It's been very windy here with only a little rain. I'll have to clean up the yard, but that's it.

    Love,
    Janie

  13. First, I'm glad y'all are safe! Having lived in Savannah for 26 years, I KNOW how disconcerting the waiting is with wind and rain around! Secondly, 2 mil for that gorgeous piece of architecture is beyond a steal, sweetpea, it's unbelievable! 2mil in L.A. MIGHT get you a 2-3 bed,2 bath place herein the flats! xoxo
