This is the Good residence, a midcentury LA home that was on the market for the first time in 63 years after having just one owner. The home sits comfortably at the top of a long ascending driveway on a piece of land that was carefully chosen and purchased in 1960 by the Good family, a thoughtful and secluded lot in which they’d soon thereafter build their lifelong family residence. This dream home was built in 1961 and inspired by the iconic Philip Johnson Glass House, with the intention to construct a sharp Mid Century home with a pool and stunning views, encompassed by nature, sky and natural light. The structure is unusually rich in graceful original details such as oversized floor to ceiling windows and unblemished original wooden paneling, closets and built-ins that still feel remarkably untouched. The focal point of the living space is its dropped and centered 360 degree fireplace, a showpiece that beams historic character into the light filled setting. An open dining area is partially separated by a curved brick wall, flanked by a wall of glass that allows seamless city views beyond the lush yard. The primary suite comes with an oversized walk-in wardrobe area and closet, as well as a separate den or office space. The kitchen—which can use an update—is centered in between the primary bedroom and the three other bedrooms, each of which are on the other side of the home. Open wall space on both sides of the kitchen allows for expanded visual depth from both the dining area and the den. Outside is a large pool and several entertaining spaces are ideal for summer parties, outdoor dining and play time with children and pets. The property and setting are intentionally surrounded by nature and offer privacy from most neighboring houses. The house was sold to its second owner for just under $2 M. Oh YES! I love it, and please don't let a modern designer butcher that wonderful functional kitchen with useful storage.
ReplyDeleteI LIKE the house, I LOVE the garden. I could tweak the house a bit to my liking but as long as I had that yard I'd be in heaven.
DeleteIt’s gorgeous. I wouldn’t change a thing. Well, I might rearrange some furniture.
ReplyDeleteI do minor fixes, but as I said up there, I am sold by that yard!
DeleteThat's really quite special.
ReplyDeleteA beautiful piece of property!

I can work with this. I will put aside the cost of living in LA during your dotage. The outside space is just captivating. I can create vignettes across the property to take in the views and weather. I can create a more welcoming interior. A little color to knock down all the white. I love the tone of the wood. Selected floor coverings, rugs, to define and anchor the spaces and bring in some warmth. I don't know about that fireplace/pit in the middle of the room. I like it but I will never use it. The clean up and the smoke is not my cup of tea. Is it gas? Love the light. Let me call my people and see if we can purchase this property.
ReplyDeleteI'd live outside so I'd need an outdoor kitchen!
DeleteYes, yes, YES! This is what houses should look like. I am very much a mid-century ranch kind of person.
ReplyDeleteI do love one-floor living and all that glass and those clean lines but I would snatch this house up just for the garden and the views!
DeleteI am not normally drawn to mid century modern and definitely not LA but this looks so "livable".
ReplyDeleteIt's just so peaceful, inside and especially outside!
DeleteTruly stunning. Yep, the kitchen and bathrooms need a bit of updating. But I could live there!
ReplyDeleteI little zhuzh but nothing major!
DeleteIt’s an exceptional place and location. Not my style but I still like it.
ReplyDeleteIt really suits me, though mostly the yard, but I could work with the house!
DeleteHhhm. all of that white makes it look like a very expensive rental property, however, a splash of color would fix all of that. Nice pool.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind the white because the views and the windows give me color!
DeleteNot bad. It's large and airy and not pretentious.
ReplyDeleteSpot on, Andrew!
DeleteI like this ranch home and if I could move it to Naperville, IL, I would move right into it. It's cool.
ReplyDeleteI like it too, though I'd have to bring the gardens, too!
DeleteThe first photo after your text has a giant black cat staring out of the front doorway.
ReplyDeleteMidcentury door knobs.
