Governors of Illinois are known for a few things, mostly scandals and arrests and prison time; even a little thing like selling a Senate seat.
But now, in Illinois, they have Bill Brady, the Republican gubernatorial front-runner, who, if he wins, will propose changing the state constitution to ban same-sex marriages.
Of course, Brady won't stop at just banning same-sex marriage, he is also seeking to ban civil unions. He has proposed the measure as part of a package of ideas about taxes, legislative term limits and the redistricting process, saying, "I'm trying to give the government back to the people."
But only if you're straight, and a homophobe, because in Bill Brady's Illinois, those are the only kinds of people that count.
Why is Illinois so crazy?
ReplyDeletePlus, eartquakes & blizzards...
that state is nuttier than South Carolina!
I may have to get involved in this election to make sure this 'phobe doesn't get elected!
ReplyDeleteThis would be such a major setback for a state that is on the verge of turning a corner!
He's also trying to pass a law to allow religious organizations to discriminate against LGBT people, even if it's in secular positions.
ReplyDeleteIt's Illinois SB2447 - see the ACLU alert about it.
