This is the John Show Ranch Estate, a Spanish Colonial Revival home that is one of the most significant historic structures in the San Fernando Valley. At the time of construction in the 1920s, the Show Ranch encompassed over 350 acres of citrus and walnut trees.
Today, the home is privately situated high above a surrounding development of Charles Du Bois midcentury homes and in pristine condition thanks to a multidecade, multimillion-dollar restoration by the current owners in collaboration with historic architects and contractors.
An ascending driveway leads to the grand arched front exterior and expansive wrap-around porch overlooking beautiful gardens and mature trees. The grand and soaring interior entrance sets a tone of distinction and artisan craftsmanship with its oversized carved Mahogany door, forged iron work, original Gladding McBean floors and original Malibu decorative tiles and fixtures are showcased throughout the home.
A bright and incredibly large step-down living room is the heart of the first floor, boasting hardwood floors, a decorative cast citrus fireplace above a Malibu tile hearth and a custom silk and wool carpet that was specifically designed for this room. The living room flows seamlessly into a large den and bar, perfect for entertaining. The large kitchen was recently completely overhauled to marry the modern with the memorable and features both original and custom cabinetry, Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances.
Just off of the kitchen, a large dining area is overlooked by ornate original ceiling plaster work. Dedicated to preserving the home, the current owners restored light fixtures whenever possible, and had new figures duplicated to ensure that the look and historical integrity of the property remained intact.
Upstairs, the property features 4 large bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, with original colorful Malibu tile bathroom floors, fixtures and fireplace tiles. Unlike many builds from the 1920's, the home has plenty of closet space and accompanying dressing rooms. Recent systems upgrades include a new roof, exterior sewer line, triple zoned HVAC and ducting and new electrical wiring and panels.
Outside is a resort like heated pool and patio settings were completely rebuilt and fortified to code in 2017 with structural pylons, rebar and retaining walls. The patios were tiled with period correct Arto Brick tiles to ensure that the 1928 experience was felt in every aspect of the property.
The upper exterior patio conveniently comes with a large custom bar and BBQ, while the lower patio offers plenty of space for pool parties and long summer evenings with family and friends.
It’s like living in history … featuring the original details and artisan craftsmanship, while being fully updated to the way we live today.
Well, that definitely screams Telenovelas!!!! I can see the actors in their doing their thing. I loke bit and pieces of it. I love that green room and of course the kitchen is glorious. But green in a bathroom...nope...casts a terrible color on skin tone when getting ready.... but some of the colors are funky, and that wall and railing system drives me nuts above the stairwell. Feels dated. But everything else I loved!!!! I mean who wouldn't want a private balcony off their master bedroom??? And I'd be living in the pool and outdoor living areas.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind the green bathroom; if I need to put on makeup I'll got to another bathroom!
DeleteI love the arches and the iron railings because it fits the old house.
But you're right about that pool area. Living!
Stunning!
ReplyDeleteThe only room I find bland is that family room with the bar; it doesn't fit with the rest of the house for men.
DeleteOf course, it is lovely but it bothers me. I guess they created lots of jobs having that done.
ReplyDeleteWith the tile and beams and iron work and arches, I imagine many artisans were working a lot!
DeleteVery nice.
ReplyDeleteHuge, and say that as a Size Queen. I love that they have kept up with some modern touches while keeping what seems to be the original structure intact. One of those bedrooms is the size of the first apartment I had. Maybe bigger.
XOXO
It does have a lot of space, and a lot of historic Spanish details that I love!

ReplyDeleteVery colorful!
xoxo :-)
I like some of the colors. Others? Not so much.

Not entirely my taste but I love the home. To me, the outside space is as important as the inside. The grounds and pool are welcoming. I was looking for ductwork for the triple a/c and could not see any. I helped a guy in DC find an a/c system that would not give one of those types of ducts. It worked out to not ruin the aesthetic of his row home. I would research that green in the solan and bathroom. Let's talk about alternate period-appropriate colors. Also, a discussion should be had about the all-glass kitchen cabinet fronts. I want as much light as possible so let's revisit those green outside window coverings. That entry is grand in a subtle way. It gives visitors a feeling of what a great home is. I want to see more.
ReplyDeletePS--I would rethink the placement of the cooktop and sink on an island. I would just use the island as a prep/work surface.
ReplyDeleteI think you need to scrape up some coins for your renovation budget!
DeleteCasa bella - love the pool area, the wood balcony, the bathrooms in different colors, the asymmetric arches and period light fixtures. One could envision Rudolph Valentino dancing a tango on the tile floors. :)
ReplyDeleteI do love those asymmetrical arches, too. You don't see those very often.
DeleteWas the original designer Myron Hunt? Or perhaps Irving Gill?
ReplyDeleteThe transitional spaces from interior/exterior remind me of Hunt's work at Occidental College. For some reason I associate the "punched out" minimalist colonnades with Gill's work.

A builder by the name of L.G. Knipe was commissioned by John Show to design and build the house.
DeleteOh my! To find the love of my life so late in life...my own Spanish hacienda wonderland!! I love every inch of floor tile and ironwork!! If you're looking for me, I'll be in the cozy library opening into the bright bar OR in the bright bar opening into the cozy library. Either way works fine for me!! 🥰
ReplyDeleteI agree; lots of space and lots or craftsmanship in the home. I love that, too!
DeleteSunset Boulevard with a gay twist.
ReplyDeleteNorman Desmond long forgotten, washed up gay porn star of the past ‘looked after’ by his bald, tan and muscle bound chauffeur, sitting around the palazzo waiting for another young and hung drifter to show up. Cocktails and cocks by the pool :-)
Now I cannot get that story out of my head!
DeleteBeautiful place
ReplyDeleteLots of style, to be sure!
DeleteIt has a stunning interior. The exterior looks a little bit too perfect. Clearly so much work has gone into the house, which may or may not be a home.
ReplyDeleteI think it has been very well-preserved, which is not always someone else's taste because it's such a specific style. But I could work with the bones and then lie by the pool!
DeleteWOW! Now that is classic California living, sweetpea! Too costly for this little black duck, but if it was offered, I'd say yes, please! xoxo
ReplyDeleteFor clarity, "little black duck" was referring to Daffy Duck and cartoons, not meant to be pejorative or offensive to any or all. (yes, I've been imbibing.) xoxo
DeleteSo, you're Daffy tonight??
DeleteI bet you'd live in that pool then!
xoxo
I could live there. Of course, if I could *afford* to live there, I could also afford the full-time support staff that place would need.
ReplyDeleteSigh.
Therein lies the rub!!!
DeleteI like it. Kind of far away though, the kids would never visit.
ReplyDeleteIt'd be a trek, I imagine!
DeleteI was disappointed with the blah room with the bar. The green of that bathroom reminds me of the background used for my 6th grade school pictures. I had just gotten out of hospital and that green only enhanced my pallor. I wouldn’t want to look in the mirror at myself with that background. Other than those two minor issues, I absolutely love this place!
ReplyDeleteThat blah blah room is the one room I don't like; it lacks the character and charm of the rest of the house.
DeleteAnd I don't mind the green bathroom so much, but I can see why you don't like it!
Yes, simply yes.
ReplyDeleteIt's got character except for that one room with the bar, but I could fix that!
DeleteI absolutely love everything about this one!
ReplyDeleteAs do I; the tiles, the ironworks, the arches, the history.
