Architecture Wednesday: Renovated 19th-century Manhattan Firehouse

Nestled in the heart of the West Village, this extraordinary 25-foot-wide, five-story townhouse—formerly a firehouse—has been transformed into a remarkable 6,850-square-foot private residence with private elevator. With a rare curb cut and a pristine four-car garage, this one-of-a-kind home blends historic charm with modern luxury and zoned for multi-use, allowing for a live-work space.

You enter the house via the second floor foyer staircase which is lit from above by a 26-foot-high ceiling, crowned by a skylight that floods the main space with natural light. The expansive living area includes exposed beams, brick walls, 25” feet of windows and a large wood-burning fireplace. The adjacent chef’s kitchen has soaring 15-foot ceilings with exposed wood beams, and French doors that open onto a beautifully landscaped 1,000-square-foot south-facing terrace equipped with built-in grilling station and irrigation—perfect for seamless indoor-outdoor living.

The third floor features a sun-drenched primary suite facing south and includes a walk-in closet and en-suite marble bath. There is a second spacious bedroom with an en-suite bath, along with a well-appointed laundry room.

On the fourth floor is a flew space, currently used as a bedroom with ensuite marble bathroom, with a floor-to-ceiling wall of glass leading to a large south-facing rooftop terrace. This room could easily be used as a den, studio or home office.

Access the ground floor 4-car garage is via a private elevator or use the restored original firehouse staircase which links the kitchen to a ground floor media room and powder room. The garage/gallery space offers conversion potential, seamlessly extending the living area or serving as a dedicated office space.

The basement level is currently outfitted as a fully equipped jazz club, with hand-painted murals, a powder room, a small office, and a wine cellar; the space can easily transform into a gym, playroom, or additional office.

Located in the West Village, one of Manhattan’s most coveted neighborhoods, this home offers access to world-class dining, boutique shopping, and cultural landmarks. With nearby parks, schools, and excellent transportation options, this one-of-a-kind residence delivers both privacy and convenience.

All for just $21,000,000.

  1. Girl...you HAD ME at West Village and Renovated 19th-century Manhattan Firehouse!!!! I love it!!!! But the exterior totally sold it for me. Loved everything about it except the cabinet doors, but they can be changed. Love all the light.

Now my question is, do any firemen come with the joint? Asking for a friend...of course.

  2. I like this one. The kitchen area would probably make me dizzy, but I could work with that.

It’s stunning! Love the openness, the style, the artwork. Only the cabinets gave me pause, well, along with the price tag. Is that really the going rate in the area? Wow! I might need resuscitating by a fireman.

  5. Swoon, oh yes, yessss, yesssss! There are a few decorator ideas, but overall, a winner. And PARKING, the kitchen can be updated while we are in Germany taking delivery of a new S class.

  6. This is so...perfect, I wouldn't change a thing. With my M.D., the elevator is a must. Love the piece above the fireplace and that tile mural. Heck, I don't even mind those cabinets! Of course, my penchant for nude living would either be curtailed outdoors on that terrace or give the neighboring units lovely shows in Summer.

    2. Probably. If I wasn't so old and saggy, I probably wouldn't bother trying to hide. LOL

I'm in. It's very Bond Villain in some aspects but it's very beautiful and spacious in others. The parking, the rooftop, the space!!!
    Yes, please.

  8. This kind of preservation has always been a fantasy home of mine. I love every last bit except the cabinet doors and matching panels in the kitchen. Do you think they’d 21.5 million off the price for those?

    1. Mine, too! We have a small firehouse here in Camden that was turned into a home years back. It was for sale when we moved here but slightly out of our price range!

😯 I'm amazed by the comments. For once, I actually like the cabinets in the kitchen and I think those colors work well against that color of brick. 🤷‍♀️
I would probably change that one free form chandelier over the bed and maybe the dark sunburst mosaic tile in the bathroom...both things seem to be trying to carry forward the color scheme from the kitchen cabinets, but they don't thrill me.
👏 I often wonder how so many wealthy people have horrific taste in home selection and decor, but not here! These folks have money AND style...I only have one of those things! 🤭🫶

    1. The cabinets look cheap to me; I mean the design. I imagine they were far from cheap!

  11. Of course it has an elevator. What is a "flew space"? I've never heard that term. I like the flowery tile floor in the bathroom!

  12. If it wasn't in New York, and it wasn't $21M ($30.5M CDN) I'd be lined up to put in an offer. What a gorgeous property, and I especially like the green spaces.

  13. I love it!! You had me at a firehouse. You do know that Anderson Cooper lives in a firehouse, and the glimpses of his place are simply stunning. I love everything about this space. The light and the airiness of the rooms. The windows. I hope we have good climate control in the place. The only quibble is with the room that has a black ceiling. That has to be changed out ASAP. It reads/feels claustrophobic. The kitchen cabinets/millwork needs to be changed out to something not as specific/individual taste. I could live with it for a short while and mull over some ideas. But one would think that for this price point, all would be set to go except maybe some paint and a few tweaks here and there. I could change out the drum room for a media/music room. The outdoor space is lovely and welcoming. I may need to rig a little privacy device to keep the neighbors from ogling me as I sunbathe au natural. On the other hand, depends on who lives back there. Anthony Carrino of HGTV's Kitchen Cousins did a full gut of a firehouse in New Jersey and did a fabulous job. He messaged me once to tell me the sidewalks around the building are heated for snow-free sidewalks. Here is the link--- https://youtu.be/akxpCn8vufw?si=cFR4sm953q8XEO5a

  17. Many of the rooms are way too dark for me but it is beautifully done - and for some reason I really like that weird bathroom floor! Does it come with its own hunky firefighter?

    1. I, too, like that tile; it's a small space so it's not too overwhelming. And if it came with its own hunky firefighter we'd have ourselves a bidding war.
