This Modernist French Norman Style home sits on a serene forested 1.6-acre site at the end of a small lane in Glendale, California's much desired Chevy Chase Canyon.
The original 1940 French Normandy-style residence was the starting point for a complete renovation and multiple additions that accentuated and celebrated both the existing and new. The home is a composition of planes and volumes, with the monochromatic leafy green facade of the original structure receding into the scenery, while the white stucco and glass of the modern mass provides a seamless connection to the lush landscape.
From the entry courtyard the house opens up to a grand living room with floor-to-ceiling glass windows and doors, blending into the sun-drenched canyons behind the home. The dining area, with its lowered ceilings and the heated concrete floors throughout, offers an intimate setting within the large space.
From there the house unfolds from public to private. The high-ceilinged kitchen and family area features a pantry and bar, and breakfast area. Cork floors warm the space and complement the woodwork and cabinetry.
A hall powder room and den lead to the private wing where you find a sitting room and library, as well as two bedrooms and a shared bath. Stairs descend to the lower primary level suite, consisting of a walk-through closet and sitting area, and bathroom with a soaking tub, and then to the main suite with views to the gardens.
The gardens are lush and surround the 4,553 square-foot house, as does hundreds of acres of dedicated open space. There are multiple terraces and decks, a citrus and vegetable garden, and the newly renovated plunge pool on the lower level; a permitted ADU was added in 2019.
It’s clean and quiet and green and peaceful; could you ask for more? Well, maybe $4M … because that’s what this home costs.
I will start packing as soon as I find the $4-M. I am not sure what is Norman about the design, it feels very mediterranean, very California. I can feel the light.
ReplyDeleteI think if you look at the outside of the house you can see a French Normandy roofline, with midcentury modern added on .... but, yes, the light is amazing!
DeleteSome of it I like (color on the walls), some of it I don't (too many windows with blinds). I'll pass.
ReplyDeleteBlinds can come down ....
DeleteOver 4500 sq ft, holy moley that's a big house! I'll take the small bedroom with the bookshelves and the incredible views. Well, as long as someone would bring my meals. :) Oh, and that pink sink is awesome!
ReplyDeleteIt is quite large but then there's the property which I just love!
DeleteI could work with this---I love the light---And I love how the owners splashed some color in the place---I could do the same---The outdoor spaces are inviting----I would enjoy the varied nooks in the house that invite conversation and relaxation---I don't know about that fuchsia sink installation---Might have to rework that---If you counting your change for purchase here is the listing that includes what comes with the home when purchased--- https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/3205-Cornwall-Dr-Glendale-CA-91206/20841999_zpid/ --- The location is a short distance North of downtown LA with Glendale to your West and Pasadena to the East- as your neighbors----A coveted location---Now if you will excuse me I have to screen for a house manager and staff---
ReplyDeleteIf I have the coins, I don't care what comes with it!
Deleteπ«Άπ I kid you not when I tell you that a rainfall shower with a picture window is a dream come true!! And, as an aging gal, the phrase "I shall sit on purple with a red chair" means a lot!! Add the bathroom basin with a bright shade of nearly purple...this home shall be mine!! In my dreams only...but still mine!! ππ
ReplyDeleteYeah, in my dreams I have the money to buy it!

As a former lifeguard - pool
is too far from the house!
xoxo :-)
Do I need to hire a lifeguard for poolside??

This is fabulous. And in California??
ReplyDeleteI'd move in right away. I LOOOVVVVEEE the outdoor, but the indoor? Winning. The right amount of mid-century-ish modern-ish and contemporary. Love.
XOXO
The property is stunning, and all those windows? I mean, it's a big house, but I might be able to deal with that!
Deletexoxo
pink sink with red carpet? idk
ReplyDeleteTo each their own, I guess???
DeleteI think it looks like a home rather than a house, and that's a good thing.
ReplyDeleteI agree!
DeleteIt is gorgeous and in a perfect SoCal spot, but the cynic in me wonders how much their fire insurance is costing them! I know, sweetpea, I'm in my Debbie Downer phase still! xoxo
ReplyDeleteHey, those are important questions!!!
Deletexoxo
I like some parts of this but not enough to consider living in it.
ReplyDeleteI'd take it for the property alone!
DeleteCool spaces. I love all the glass. And it’s such a surprise after the approach from outside. I’d have fun with that!
ReplyDeleteThe gardens are wonderful, even the veggie garden in the front; I, too, love all the glass and light.
