Actor and director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele, a film
producer, were killed this past weekend by their own son, Nick, who had a
history of substance abuse issues.
But this isn’t about that.
Rob Reiner starred in one of the most iconic TV shows of all
time, All in the Family, and went on to produce and direct such films as
This Is Spinal Tap, Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally…,
Misery, A Few Good Men, The American President, LBJ, and The
Story of Us among others.
But this isn’t about that either.
At a time when many people in this country stood against
LGBTQ+ rights and marriage equality Reiner cofounded the American Foundation
for Equal Rights, which funded the legal fight against Prop 8, the
California ballot measure that revoked marriage equality in that state.
When two same-sex couples—Kris Perry and Sandy Stier, and
Paul Katami and Jeff Zarrillo—sued over Prop. 8 after they were denied marriage
licenses, the American Foundation for Equal Rights hired lawyers Ted Olson and
David Boies to argue the case against Prop. 8.
U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker ruled in 2010 that Prop. 8
violated the U.S. Constitution while California state officials in two
consecutive administrations declined to defend Prop. 8; in 2012, the U.S. Court
of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit upheld Walker’s ruling and the following
year, the U.S. Supreme Court let that decision stand.
Reiner likened the Prop. 8 case to the landmark civil rights
case Brown v. Board of Education, which determined that
separate is not equal:
“We don’t believe in separate but equal in any other legal
position except this. We feel that this is the last piece of the civil rights
puzzle being put into place.”
And he continued to be an ally; at the Human Rights
Campaign’s Los Angeles dinner in 2019, he spoke out for LGBTQ+
equality, saying:
“We have to move past singling out transgender, LGBTQ, Black,
white, Jewish, Muslim, Latino. We have to get way past that and start accepting
the idea that we’re all human beings. We’re all human beings, we all share the
same planet, and we should all have the same rights, period. It’s no more
complicated than that.”
At a time when the courts, the state legislatures, and our
own Congress were standing against equality Rob and Michele Reiner stood up for
simple equality, for all of us.
That’s what this is about.
Thank you, Rob and Michele, for taking up the fight, for
standing by us, and with us, and with anyone who’s ever been considered less
than in America.
RIP |
Ewwww! That last meme.
ReplyDeleteKenny Chesney has a song, "She thinks my tractor's sexy". Change the pronoun and you could sing it to Carlos. :)
I bet the photos pre-election and now would show the rot!
They are all rotting fetid corpses.
DeleteOh, that last one, LOL!
ReplyDeleteMaybe now he'll keep his hands off of the women.
DeleteHis hand is turning Black, his neck looks like a va jay jay … I love how the Universe is turning him into the things he rails against.
ReplyDeleteI truly think he is rotting from the inside out.
DeleteRob Reiner will have buildings named after him and will be regarded as a national treasure. Those pictures are iconic.
ReplyDeleteRob and Michele should be remembers as heroes and allies to our community, and all disenfranchised peoples.
DeleteThat last one is the cat's meow! Okay, I'll leave now.
ReplyDeleteIt is what it is and he wants to grab it!
DeleteWe had a single guy neighbor across the street - retired Army - and I used to tease my wife about him all the time. "He'd do you in a heartbeat!"
ReplyDeleteRob and Michelle did great things, and would've done a lot more. The diversity in their work shows their core values.
A hot neighbor is a thing of beauty and a joy forever!
DeleteThe Reiner's were all that was right with the world; we need more like them.
What? No photos of "bearded and beefy" boyfriend?
ReplyDeleteI am so not sneaky with the phone ... I have been trying to get a picture of the hot young man that does yardwork at Casa Bob y Carlos and I haven't managed that either!
Deleteπ₯Ή Yes. For so many memorable reasons, RIP for the Reiners and peace to that devasted family.
ReplyDeleteπ€¨ I have tried for decades to understand the anti-LGBTQIA+++ haters. There just isn't anything that makes sense except that they desperately need to hate somebody (or many bodies) and this group of haters is very welcoming to other haters. π€¬
Hubby and I lived in CA during Prop 8 and we joined Equality California and got the chance to march and speak and attend Lobby Day in Sacramento. We were amazed at the number of people who mindlessly said the very same talking points. These zombies π§♀️ always claimed "the gays want more rights than anyone else so they can destroy American families!" π§♂️
π± Yep, that "gay agenda" sure is scary!
Hubby and I would often say that maybe these people should go home and work on strengthening their own family. "There's nothing wrong with my family!!" We would ask how some married boy couples or married girl couples, then, could destroy your strong, beautiful family. Mostly we got gibberish as the response. That's the way it is with hate for hate's sake...it is just gibberish but with more shouting and more gnashing of teeth and more victimhood! Haters Go Home!! π
For the record, when I came out I received the Official Coming Out Toaster Oven™ and my own copy of The Gay Agenda, which I instantly opened up to read and it said: Equality.
DeleteThat's all.
In death, Rob Reiner and his wife Michele deserved more respect and kindness than they received from Orange Shrek. Even if he did not like them, he could have been presidential, saying the proper thing for once. Instead and once again, it's all about him.
ReplyDeleteHe cannot express loss and sorrow because he only cares about himself and his wallet; he's a sociopath.
DeleteSuch a great quote from Rob Reiner. He was so right.
ReplyDeleteTaken far too soon.
DeleteThe Reiners were true allies.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry they had to go that way.
And the current White House truly believe they are 'celebrities'. More like celebitches the lot of them. I love how that blonde *person* had her fillers put up and front and I hope they migrate and make her the monster of vanity she is.
Hate them all with the passion of seven thousand million suns.
Oh yes. It's NEVER the tractor what I wanna ride.
And I wonder if Claudio needs help to get off the floor???
XOXO
The camera captured their true essences.
DeleteWhatever it is Claudio needs, I am there to help!
the dog's mother

Delete“I didn’t say anything about a tractor” is Hall of Fame neighbor-flirting material. Thanks for the heartfelt tribute to Rob and Michele Reiner. They will be missed.
ReplyDeleteThey Reiner's were, and will always be, the quiet heroes, doing what's right because it's right, not for glory.
DeleteCarlos still wonders about the, um, tractor.
The last meme cracked me up. I was laughing so hard I was wet myself. Thanks for that chuckle Bob. Of course the Carlos story cracked me up too. Are you determined to get me to Wet myself?
ReplyDeleteI do whatever I can to help! πππ
DeleteConcerning the portraits in Vanity Fair. The photographer Christopher Anderson said that his pictures are not celebrity portraits so no photoshop or what not. These are just pictures of the administration. Christopher is known for his style of close up, unvarnished photographs. There was a conversation with Christopher and S. Miller. Miller wanted to know if he should smile. Christopher left it up to him. The conversation relayed was more of how Miller was going to preserved and a little apprehension of the finished product. You know what, sometimes the camera captures pure evil up close and personal. And don't let Whiles fool you in playing coy. She drank the Kool Aid a long time ago. She is evil as they come.
ReplyDeleteHere is a great perspective the Vanity Fair "hit piece" from the SilentMiddleChild on YouTube:
https://youtu.be/krfmpldF9Zg?si=k8xUu_8OfuiwJSR9
4:30 minutes
It's just that the regime thinks they are wonderful beautiful people but the camera showed their true selves and now they are freaking out.
DeleteAmerica lost a treasure when the Reiners died. They did us proud.
ReplyDeleteYes they did; such a horrible fate.
DeleteThe death of the Reiners is tragic.
ReplyDeleteI hope Carlos returned your remark with a smug half smile.
The last photo and caption amused me.
Carlos is always in on the joke!!
DeleteThat was a great speech by Rob Reiner. We ARE all just people.
ReplyDeleteCommon sense.
DeleteThe death of the Reiner’s and the felon’s reaction have really given me a lot of angst. I don’t know if we can survive 3 more years of this. That last piece with the post from Bluesky sure got a needed smile from me!
ReplyDeleteI feel much the same but, as a few in the GOP stand against him, I feel a little more hopeful that he won't be around much longer.
