Architecture Wednesday: The Snyder House

The Snyder House—a Bertrand Goldberg design—is something of a legend in the long history of Shelter Island. Built in 1952 it was recognized as a mid-century marvel, both in design and waterfront location, offering magnificent panoramic water views of West Neck Harbor and Long Island Sound.

In 2002, the current owners undertook rebuilding the home on its original sprawling footprint, maintaining the elements of its mid-century modernist design while sparing no expense to bring this 20th-century masterpiece up to 21st-century living standards of ultimate comfort and high-end quality. The result is a 6,000 square foot one-level oasis perched on three-quarters of an acre, surrounded by water, offering magical sunsets, and jaw-dropping water views that remain as spectacular today as those enjoyed by the Snyder family70 years ago.

The original massive stone fireplace—with 8 flue—and stone floors pay homage to Bertrand Goldberg's vision, providing a dramatic contrast with the interior glass walls, revealing water and nature beyond. There are 6 bedrooms and 4 and 1/2 baths, a cook's kitchen, and numerous seating areas. Outside there is 74-foot-long heated saltwater gunite pool, a private beach, plus something truly rare and unusual: a 235-foot-deep water dock.

Located in the heart of Shelter Island, with easy access to world-class dining and shopping, The Snyder House, is not to be missed … though it was just sold for $14M USD.

I guess I did miss it.

  1. I found the name a little confusing since I don't recall that being one of my properties, however, I might consider it.

    1. Perhaps a long lost relative? Maybe you have a chance in the will???

  2. Drool! A little large, and I would shift the dinning room closer to the kitchen, and add some color, but I could live there. I would want a stouter seawall with rising sea levels.

    1. I'd probably move the dining room to that one side of the living room so you could have see views while dining!!

  3. Too bad it already sold. I'd be tempted to use my tax refund to snatch up that view.

    Love,

  4. Wow. I'd heard about this place but never seen pictures. Stunning. Love that tiled bedroom. And that kitchen. $14M and probably worth every penny.

    1. I don't get overpriced at all, not with the size of the home and all the property!

  7. Have read a bit about it but have never been clear if it was entirely rebuilt or majorly renovated. I do love it. WAY too big. And that’s a long walk between the kitchen and dining room, although I suppose who cares how much walking the staff have to do. What a location.

  8. Wow! I saw so many spots where one could sit and contemplate the water. I'd just wander from one spot to another.

  9. I have mixed reviews/thoughts.

It's a little too big for me at 6,000 square feet.

I love the views, the light, the large windows, and the outdoor space. I would make the outside space more inviting.

I am a little turned off by all the hard services of the home. The floors and the walls. I just need a little softening.

I wonder about the weather being surrounded by all that water. It will be cold in the winter for sure and blistery at other times. Not to mention the wear and tear on the home.

All in all, a beautiful home, but I would have to pass.

New York is a 3-hour/25-minute car ride, and New Haven is a 2-hour and 4-minute ride, including a ferry.

  11. I love this, size, wood and all! I figure that as long as I'm imagining having the money for this, I can imagine having houseboys, housekeepers and house cats to go with it.

  12. Absolutely stunning.
I love everything about this: the location, the layout, the colors, the MOOD. If you are gong to go Mid-Century, THIS is how it's done.
This would be an ideal home. Only thing I'd change? That pool table. I don't thing that's necessary at all...

    XOXO
