Architecture Wednesday: Sausalito Houseboat

I grew up about 90 minutes from San Francisco and then lived there all through college and a couple of years after, and one of my favorite spots to visit was across The Bay in Sausalito. So this home, literally on the water in Sausalito, really speaks to me …

This one-of-a-kind, three-story floating home is where bold architectural vision meets serene waterfront living; located on coveted Liberty Dock—Sausalito’s premier floating home community—this residence offers breathtaking sunrise views over Richardson Bay and vibrant sunset skies each evening.

It features two bedrooms and two-and-one-half bathrooms in just over 1800 square feet of three light-filled levels with oversized windows and an open concept flow. There is a spa bath and a red cedar soaking tub, custom tilework, heated floors, and a rare walk-in closet … on a houseboat!

The home also includes another rarity … a walk-in laundry room, as well as whole-home radiant heating, a chef’s kitchen with high-end appliances and artisan details, ample exterior storage for gear, tools, and seasonal items and water toys, multiple decks, including a 160-sq-ft rooftop retreat with lush garden features

Meticulously reimagined, every element was chosen with intention from the artisan tilework—though that tile behind the stove might have to go—and curated finishes to a layout that mirrors the movement of the water, this residence balances striking design with soulful livability.

More than a home, it’s a statement, a sanctuary, and a way of life for just $3M.

  1. I liked this a lot... except for that horrifically gray kitchen. Why can't people be unique, rather than trendy?

    1. I don't mind the kitchen except for the hideous tile.

What a beauty! If only money didn’t matter! Someone must have been under the influence when selecting the backsplash and bedroom wallpaper, but that’s fixable.

    1. Parts of it look very Vegas casino but that could be fixed.

  3. So does it bob up and down in a storm?

    1. It probably moves a little, but most aren't made to take out on the water so they are firmly affixed to the dock.
Wait, did you want to know if I bob up and down in a storm??? 😊😊😊

  4. That is extraordinary and quite unlike any houseboat I've ever seen. A childhood friend lived on a houseboat and it was very . . . simple.

    1. This is a lot, and I might like it better simplified ... but the location sells me all day long!

  5. Oh, my, yes! Good sq footage and laid out nicely. And that hot tub - gimme! The deck area? Love it. Only thing I'd change is the wallpaper in the bedroom. Accent walls are good, but that pattern --- does it work? IDK....

  7. A houseboat has always been a fantasy of mine. First in Amsterdam. Then in Seattle. Never imagined anything this big or luxurious. Wow! But the maintenance put me off. Still, I can fantasize.

    1. Yeah, it's a lot of work but I keep thinking, views, San Francisco, Sausalito ... a queerling can dream!

  8. This home reminds me of a blogger's-Greg In Hollywood (blog version of People magazine with no teeth) friend who has a houseboat in /around Long Beach. I love your choice for today.

The houseboat is of the right size not too big or small. The kitchen is perfect. I would revisualize the kitchen backsplash treatment and the color choice of the cabinets. The black/gray trend is so over. That could be an easy fix. But at that price point the place should be ready to move in with little tweaking. The layout is perfect for me. The place has lots of big windows and light which is a must for me. I am trying to figure out that wallpaper in the bedroom. Not a deal breaker but it might not grow on me. I am practical girl so I don't know how many times I would use the wood soaking tub. That one bedroom that opens up to the other parts of the houseboat and has a large window, with light glaring in, I might want to configure some type of blinds for sleeping in and the sun not roasting me. I love the outside spaces. I just need some type of shade to protect my skin and bald head. All in all a perfect retreat by the water.

    1. I love the location and the houseboat-iness of it all but some of the glitzy accents need to go. Give wood and fire and water and Zen.

  9. You had me at 'houseboat community' I wanna live there!
Three million, huh? Worth it. This has everything a house/apartment anywhere else could have. And it's fabulous. I'm glad you clarified those houses don't go out to sea. I'd be terrified in a three story house in the middle of a storm at sea.

    XOXO

    1. Yeah, I mean some houseboats are made to take some lakes and stuff, but I'd steer well clear of an ocean!

  10. Yes please! Between the water views and the light flowing through the entire place, I'd be as close to my perfect place as possible. That's an amazing property!

    1. It's got some quirks I would change but you're right about the views and the light.
