Death, Wills, Snow Days, Eggs

Well after the threat of snow and ice last weekend, which never materialized, the snow came this past weekend and made everything pretty for a couple of days. It was quiet and peaceful and c-c-c-cold way to spend the weekend and, of course, our trip to Asheville was cancelled—which I will reschedule in April for Carlos’ birthday—but it was nice.

We ran errands on Friday … we stopped by the attorney to have our wills updated which is never a fun thing to do, but its necessary.

After that we went to talk to a flooring person about changing out the floors. It’s part of the same company that built out cabinets so we stopped over at their offices and found a sign on the door. They are planning a move to a larger space so I thought that was what the sign said, but instead it said the man, Larry,  we were coming to see had suddenly passed away and the offices were closed for several days. Really shocking as we had seen him just last month at the Camden Christmas Parade and he seemed fine. We called our contractor and he said Larry had a massive heart attack last week and passed quickly.

It can all go so fast.

Switching gears … we decided to do our grocery shopping since the snow was coming Saturday and, of course, so did everyone else. Luckily, we weren’t stocking up on all the bread and milk and canned soup so those aisles were relatively calm. Then came the egg aisle and the crowd of people grabbing at the eggs. I stood back and waited until the herd thinned and noticed a woman watching a man check each and every cartoon of eggs before choosing one; finally he was done and she reached in, plucked a carton and off she went. I did the same and then Carlos and I  headed off to checkout where that same woman got in line behind me and so I said:

“I saw you watching all those vultures at the egg case and loved how you just reached in, grabbed a carton and left.”

“Honey, I’m from New York. I am not playing.”

“I’m not from New York and I’m not playing either.”

Kindred spirits.

The Girls, Rosita and Consuelo, had zero desire to step outside in the snowfall so I found an old photo of Tuxedo with snow on his head, ... doesn’t he look happy … and one of Ozzo the Pocket Dog nesting in the snow ...

And now a little Casa Bob y Carlos looking quite peaceful and lovely yesterday…

Up the driveway …

The roads were covered and quiet …

The house through the trees …

Down the driveway …

Into the backyard …

And finally the shed which I am trying to turn into a music room so Carlos can practice his trumpet at least 75 feet away from me ... I kid, or do I …

After breakfast Carlos went out into the yard and came back in and said it was nice outside. I reminded him that, yes, the sun was out and it felt warm, but it was 19-degrees which is roughly 11-degrees lower than his What The Fuck threshold.

So yesterday was peaceful and sunny and snowy, and we had a delicious Ham and White Bean soup with crusty bread, but today is back at work, then a day off, then two days working, then my usual three-day weekend.

It’s a cycle.

    1. We have another chance at snow mid-month; this bit is still here because it's still c-c-c-cold, but it'll be gone soon!

    1. Even more so with the snow; it was so quiet, just the breeze in the trees.

  3. I hope it melts off fast. It is colder than . . . here.

  4. Nice house. Your snow will be gone in no time, ours will stay around for another 2-3 weeks, maybe longer. Flooring, hehehe. What's you subfloor like? Plywood? Hardwood? Remember, natural hardwood is an asset to your resale value. Carpet and any form of vinyl may be attractive, but are considered cosmetic and add no value.

  5. I enjoyed your snow photos! Your house looks snug and inviting. It's really cold here, too, but I'm taking it like a rare treat. It will be back to normal weather in no time.

(ps...love the egg lady story! Good for her!)

  6. The only thing I miss about winter snowstorms --- seeing them from inside the house.
Hey, a little power, some insulation, light, HVAC and that music room is good to go! (Sorry, Carlos!)

  7. Your home and property look lovely, Bob! I didn't realize you had such a large yard. Looks so cozy and private. The snow is pretty. I'm guessing there is no shoveling or snow plowing?

    1. The yard is nice and private and calm, with the snowfall, and we had no need for shoveling or plowing, thank goodness!!

  8. The first (maybe only for you?) snow is always pretty. Like you, I enjoy how hushed it is outside as the snow muffles the sounds. Though I'm not a fan of 5 months of it!
I do check a package or two for eggs to see if they are cracked - my mom taught me to do that. But if the first one isn't broken, it goes in my cart.

    1. They are saying we might get another hit in the next couple of weeks so we'll see. Whatever falls, shuts down the town, so that's not fun.
I just watched this woman watching the hordes check all the eggs before they got out of her way and she took her carton. She and I were on the same wavelength!

    1. Little snow and the hoarders come out because they think they'll be trapped at home for weeks on end!!

  10. Being from the north originally, I find that I love when it snows. The good thing about living farther south is that the snow doesn’t last long. Your photos are beautiful and that soup sounds amazing!

  11. You & Carlos live in such a tranquil, wooded area -- not at all what I'd imagined... another 2 feet of snow and it could be almost anywhere in Canada, LOL!

  13. It’s beautiful. Enjoy as you can. SG’s What The Fuck threshold now stands at 49F. The long underwear is worn when it’s below 55 (it used to be 60; he’s toughened up).

We’ve had snow for weeks here. Weeks.

  18. You live in a lovely place Bob - with so much space around your property. Are you sure that Carlos will be far enough away to practise his trumpet playing? How about 75 yards rather than 75 feet?

  19. I'd forgotten you and Carlos live in a house (a whole house with a yard around it!), somehow imagining you both in a nice apartment. I think 75 feet away is okay as long as you soundproof the house or the music room.
